Driving on trade plates - Round The Bend
During an eventful journey home last night, spotted a Merc CLK convertible hurtling down the outside lane at a good (or bad) 90+ mph. Just after he passed me he had to conduct an emergency braking manoeuvre to avoid running into a car that had moved into his lane. He then resumed his frantic pace down lane 3.

Only then noticed that the car was driving on trade plates. Could n't help wondering how the owner (or prospective owner) would have viewed the way car was being treated.

What are the rules for using trade plates? Do they just mean that the car is being driven under the garage's insurance or are there other implications?

There are strict rules for the circumstances in which you can use trade plates but as far as the actual driving is concerned the rules and laws of the road apply just the same as any car being driven.

A CLK can be driven at 90 mph and do a bit of hard braking - it is built for it. The fact that it was on trade plates doesn't mean it was new. Carp driving but not bad for the car.

It was n't new, about a year old.

Sure it can do the speed - and the braking - but perhaps not on a busy Mway with increased risk of pranging the thing for someone.

We eft ours at the garage once nd only realised when we got to London to collect an un-registered Accord, the driver reckoned it wouldn't be a problem, there are so few traffic patrols he decided to chance it.

He drove it back at a rate of knots and didn't get a second glance off anyone driving with no plates at all. He arrived home over an hour ahead of me and I was doing more than 70 for most of the way. At least the guy's new car was well run-in! :-)
