Sorry cant find what you mean ?

This characteristic will become more apparent as the front tyres wear.
I suppose this may be a possibility, as my front tyres are almost dead. Regarding the ESP comment, this definately isn.t the issue as the phenomenon occurs on the overun, and anyway the ESP light would blink if the ESP was activated.

Forget any other issues until you have replaced the tyres.
I bet a brand new A4 (piece of paper) that new tyres sort it!

You have gone through a set of tyres on the front in 10 months? wow expensive motoring

I'd be interested to know what size tyres, type and how many miles they have done too.
The 17 inch Pirellis Zeros on my A3 appear to be wearing quickly.

This is my second A4 Avant and the first (B6) Avant I had did 17.5K topps on a set of front tyres which were 205x55x16. My current car has just under 13K on it and I would say the tyres have about 1 - 1.5K left in them and they are 235x45x17.
All of the FWD diesel cars I've had have chewed tyres fairly quickly.
I still dont think however that my snatchy steering issue is tyre related as it happens at relatively low speeds on dry roads where gripshould not be an issue at all. The problem seems as though something in the steering/suspension isn't keeping the wheels in check as well as it should be.

I had a Mark1 A4 Tdi and front tyres lasted 28k, rears 40k. I do not hang around but fast cornering and local country roads = death for someone so my cornering is always quite sedate.

However ...
"My car has a tendency to follow ruts and inconsistencies on rougher roads much more than it used to, making the steering sometimes 'snatchy' when driving on country lanes that are a bit rough."
... describes worn tyre symptoms perfectly.
Tyre tread is designed in part to ensure that the tyre tracks straight and does not follow ridges and ruts, this ability lessens as they wear even if the overall grip levels are maintained.

I guess I dont have long to wait to check out this theory, about another month or so and I should need some new front tyres. I sure hope this issue goes away, I've never erxperienced anything like this since I was driving knackered Ford Escorts back in the 80's !

Did you ever get a solution to this problem as my Audi A4 Cab 2003 is doing the same. Had a similar problem on a volvo s60 and it turn out to be a front nearside lower ball joint.
Just jacked up my nearside wheel and their appears to be a little play on it.
|
This is usually a problem with high performance/sporty type tyres.
TRY SOMETHING MORE TOURING ORIENTED LIKE PIRELLI P7 OR GOODYEAR Excellence, ad I bet it's OK.
|
I'd say get all the many bushes/arms checked. A4's are infamous for the front suspension design.
|
Low profile worn tyres what do you expect on UK roads.

I've done a bit of checking myself, and cannot see any play anywhere in the suspension, after all the car has only done 12.5K miles. Iam hoping that a new set of front tyres may either elliminate or fix the problem, although I am sceptical.

Just investigating a couple of large knocks I get when steering hard right - the car actually is jumping sideways as well! I would stay it knocks / jumps once per wheel revolution on hard lock (obviously just an estimate).
I have a 04 A4 cabrio 2.4 multitronic.
have had the car 6 months and 'noticed' it after a few weeks of purchase.
it has got steadily worse - part due i would say to the fact that the front left tyre is now worn massively more than the front left (or rears)
brought it to the nearest VW/Audi service centre because a knock had developed in the front left.
results:
front left CV changed - knock has disappeared nearly completely except under medium/hard breaking while turning.
SHUDDER REMAINED
brought it back & they had it for a few days.
Results:
they said - rechecked alignment and tracking (i presume camber and caster but dont know). problem remained
after consulting with Audi HQ they lifted the car and loosened the sub-frame as "it can sometimes get out of line". it was "but very little"
problem still remains.
had it to my mate for the last week. hes the guy who does the local NCT (MOT) tests here (so knows what hes looking at)
siad it looked perfect underneath and he wouldnt worry - didnt manage to recreate problem while in car with him.
he recommended "computerised" tracking and camber and caster - not laser type. i dont know if this has already been tried but i think the VW guys must have before tackling the sub frame
stumped aand it pink fluffy dice me off.
