Anyone else driven this with the 7 speed auto box...?

Somehow it keeps going into 'M' (manual..?) mode where it is very reluctant to change gears automatically. Moving off from rest you hit the red line before an automatic gear change occurs.

I like the idea of semi-automatics - automatic with 'manual overide', but I don't see the point of M mode..

Surely M mode puts it in manual so you are then in control of changing gear - either using paddles or by pushing/pulling the gearstick. They don't usually go into M mode unles you tell them to.

It changes gear when you hit the redline to stop the engine blowing up!

Isnt M mode manual override?

It is not supposed to change itself in M, the fact that it does is a safety function to avoid damage, likewise it will not change down if doing so over revs the engine.

I find that if you are like me and like to rest one hand on the gear lever when driving you can unknowingly move the gear lever sideways into manual.

I had this happen to me a few times when I first had the car. The answer is keep your hand off the gear lever once drive has been selected.

Once I realised what I was doing it hasn't happened since.

Thanks for the info.

There is no indication on the dash or gear lever how 'M' is selected..!
And more importantly how to de-select it.

Maybe I want to over-ride the auto-changer now and again, but don't want manual mode all the time.

Sounds like a design flaw to me, MB have shot themselves in the foot (almost like the foot operated parking brake on manual cars...)

Very very bad habit, I once wrecked the gearbox of a sierra doing this.

I was cured of the habit of resting my hand on the gear stick many years ago in a 1970's Mk2 Ford Escort. Changing 'enthusiastically' from 1st to 2nd one day the gear lever came off in my hand. It was held onto the gearbox by a threaded plastic cup that had the thread worn away due to my hand not allowing it to vibrate along with the rest of the drivetrain, or so my mechanic uncle told me.

Push the lever quickly to the left to get manual: push it to the right and hold it for about a second to get automatic. I agree that it's quite easy to select manual by accident, but no harm is done as it goes into only one 'gear' lower than you were in.

I don't know about you, but I leave mine in S permanently: S and C are meant to stand for sport and comfort, but it's more like standard and crawl - and mine's a B200 CDI.

I test drove two very impressive Skoda Octavias today - a 140 TDI and a 170 TDI vRS - it shows how far Skoda has come in recent years that getting back into the Mercedes was a comedown. Both were manuals and I need to try the DSG. Has anyone driven a VW or Audi with 170 bhp and DSG? Apparently Skoda will being this combination in soonish.

Full marks to Greg at Ashmore Green Skoda in Newbury for letting me go out on my own.

Not yet, but come 5pm tomorrow I should have.

I've now done 200 miles since picking up my A3 2.0TDI 170 with S tronic (DSG). Lets just say so far it's better than my previous A3 and not only due to the extra 30PS. I'll do a proper review when I've done a few more miles and have a bit more time.

I had a brief drive in a Golf TDI 170 DSG. Very nice if (still) a bit rattly, but it did seem very overpriced to me.
