You dont need to go to an expensive specialist- its quite a straight forward job.

Yes you need to change the whole hub assembly. Have some new bearings pressed in while you change them over.

If you have 15" wheel or larger get some caliper carriers from a corrado, then you can fit 280mm discs and have decent brakes. The 90 on calipers are ok but its better to fit the g60 calipers found on g60 golf carrado, and a few other volkswagens.

You will also need to change the master cylinder as the small brake cars have a smaller diameter one. You can fit the 22m version from the later cars, or better still buy an early Corado VR6 servo and master cylinder for the best brake feel. A mark 2 with the 280mm discs, big calipers and corrado cylinder stops very well- i had the setup on my mk.2 Jetta Gti 16v.

While you are doing all this change the brake hoses, use new VW originals or get some braided stainless steel ones. Standard genuine VW pads will be fine.

While your doing the brakes check the "rear brake proportioning valve" not sureof its proper name any more as these are prone to leakage.

Let me know how you get on and if you need any further advice.
