Break down cover - nb857
I have a 98 Honda Civic with 80k, it is dealer maintained on time every time. I don't have break down cover. Should I? My theory is I bought a good car and take good care of it. I have never broke down in 16 years of driving, but is my luck going to run out?

One other theory I have is that by not having cover has saved me 16 annual subscriptions so if they charge £800 to tow me home I'm still in pocket. The car will be changed when it become troublesome (baring premium bond jackpots!)

Any suggestions gratefully received.

I am the same, I have a 14yo car and keep it well maintaned
However I have breakdown cover just for peace of mind it only costs me 52 pound per year and if im stranded I can get me and the car home fairly cheaply.

I would advise this on any car over 5 yo you just dont know whats round the corner

I too have an 8 yr old Mazda Xedos and a 6yr old Honda with 88K on the clock - I have breakdown cover & home start - it is the fact that IF & when you have a problem somebody comes along in 40 mins and either fixes it or ghets you home (with the car) - Not stranded in the middle of nowhere on a dark cold night makes the £92 / yr worth it

IMO there are 2 reasons for tow home breakdown cover.

1) To recover the cer
2) To ensure the cars contents and passengers get home safely.

If I knew I could get home safely and cheaply along with contents and other pasengers, then when driving a car that is worth little than a comprehensive breakdown cover premium, I wouldn't bother.

I would simply return home and contact the nearest local car breaker and ask them to retrieve it and keep it.

However, life is not always that simple.

The cost of onward travel for a driver and 4 passengers can be expensive and having to rely on taxis, trains etc comes with its own problems, so in reality you are insuring yourself against a much bigger loss.
