It is usually simpler to take the hub off as a complete assy. by removing the four bolts on the back that hold it to the suspension-you do not then have to split and retorque the bearing.

ive just taken the rear drums off a mk4 fiesta this morning to check for the usual wheelcylinder leaks /shoes with no meat /drums with the rust in and a nice big lip on the edge.
i still wonder how you can check and adjust the brakes and get a decent handbrake by undoing the back nuts if you have to put this lot on as one and then line the 4 bolts up?
one nut- one drum off- the nakedness of the backplate and all its intrinsic bits, clean check adjust/replace job done put hub on check footbrake/handbrake readjust if necessary and put nut and dustcap back on job done

as an aside if you have a 99 fiesta both mk4 and mk5 i am finding that the backplate has been modified so you dont even need to remove this and the rivets to get to the wheel cylinder bolts anymore
nice one ford.........took you long enough mind

so you dont retorque the 4 bolts then ? gosh....

Well off the top of my head I think I can recall it being 170 lb/ft, which is almost your 235nm.

I agree with JC2 this is the recomended way of access to the rear brakes. Disturbance of the rear wheel bearing is not recommended.

with the number through my workshop & 12 staff to keep an eye on I dont count but would guess at 10-20 a week with the fleet ones & never had a wheel bearing faliure yet!

why would it fail if its put back together properly? how would you release the drum when the drum has worn and has a lip? how is it quicker? do you loctite/torque the 4 nuts back up? when your putting the drum back on your way, you have to take the grease cap off to hold the nut to line up the stub axle to backplate to get the 4 bolts back in? wouldnt a customer be upset that the bearing has not been inspected while your in there? wouldnt you be happier inspecting the bearing while its off for safety?
sorry but it puzzles me how taking 4 nuts out compared to one is easier? is it because they havent got a torque wrench? if they havent should they be doing the job?

I think that most damage to this kind of bearing is via dirt inclusion which happens during service / inspection. If you can avoid opening the bearing up, and avoid the risk of contamination then its probably worthwhile taking a little extra effort to do so.

This type of bearing does tend to grumble quite a bit before failure, so, missing an opportunity for an inspection isn't such a big deal. Also, as rolling contact fatigue failure initiates beneath the surface of the bearing race, a visual inspection doesn't really give you an absolute "all-clear" anyway!

Having said this, I haven't done one of these using the modern method - that's mainly because I've only done one rear brake service on one of these cars in the last 5 years.
