Have a 2000 Pug 306 1.4lx and there has been a knocking/vibrating noise coming from the passenger footwell for the last couple of days. Not evident when I am driving wit the accelorater depressed or in neutral, but if I cruise (car in gear but cruising wit my foot off the accelrator) it vibrates and almost sounds like something is catching.
Had a neighbour who is a mechanic have a drive and he has suggetsed the gearbox is knackered which i find hard to understand as its bin fine up to press.car still goes into gear ok.
Car done just over 74,000 miles although bin serviced regularly.Just had MOT and had replacement brake pad and hose.
Any ideas coz gear box could cost me over £400.
P.S Drive shaft went last Sept but once replaced all ok.

Drive shaft failure is very common on the 306 / ZX
The intermediate bearing on the right hand shaft can also fail.
Engine mounts are also a favourite.
The MA gearbox on this 306 is bullet-proof, really only abuse & lack of servicing will kill it.

It is almost bulletproof. I managed to break the 5th gear synchro on mine, but it soldiered on for another 50K miles!

funny you should say that...the drive shaft went last summer and I had it replaced. It was serviced in Nov and I have a full service history for the car.
I must admit I am at a loss,I cant believe that the gear box is on its way out as the car is nt thrashed about...and my insurance stipulates that I only do up to 8,000 miles per year.
I have got it booked into a garage for next weds, the mechanic is going to strip the gear box down and hopefully do a repair AFTER having a drive himself.
Thanks for the advice.

I've known of two of these 1.4 boxes going. One on a 306 at 40,000 miles, and one on a Xsara at 30,000 miles. Both were differential failures, the former (like you) experiencing a knocking only when cruising.
