I have bought a mk4 golf gt tdi 150 only a week and a half ago- Had it detailed today, but on closer inspection most of the car has been resprayed, and the important bit is under the carpet where the spare wheel is in the boot, there is black kind of foamy stuff in the metal (not far from the spare wheel) and it looks suspiciously like some welding has been done at some point.
What is the backroomers opinion? many thanks.

Well, there's no law against selling a car that's been repaired.
However, if the repair is substandard, then so is the car, and you have some redress.
The repair doesn't look to bad, and the fact that they've made no attempt to disguise the fact makes it appear as though it sin't a case of someone pulling a fast one. What is the cosmetic state of the exterior?

"I really can't see the point in owning an old fiesta, especially a rattly 1.1.. Scrap it."
Sony, That was your advice to `rattle` who had just bought a £400 Fiesta and was looking for advice on 1st Feb.
Why should anyone bother to help you?

True. very true. But different problem though, I have spent 9.5k on a scrap heap myself.

I was going to agree with the guy who posted with your photos that it looked like a VW seal spray and that most cars have very basic paintwork under the boot carpet. It all looks very neat and tidy so even if it was repaired, can't see why you should complain. Get it MoT'd and see what they say.

Did you not lift the carpet when you inspected the car? Surely you would have noticed then?

Having looked at the photos my guess is that the black foamy stuff is factory-applied sealant intended to seal spot-welded joints to prevent water ingress. To put your mind at rest (or otherwise) get a VW dealer to look at the suspect areas, or perhaps even get an AA or RAC inspection done. It could be money well spent whatever their conclusions.

Having worked in the industry for years,it looks like factory-applied sealant as others have said.

...... I have spent 9.5k on a scrap heap myself.
Accident repairs rarely make a car a "scrap heap". A very high proportion* of used cars have had some sort of accident repair. Provided the repair has been carried out to a satisfactory standard the used car trade treats such cars (for both buying and selling purposes) just as it would a never-damaged car.
* No doubt HJ can give you the percentage. Why not email him?
