Is it better to take a higher excess and insure that under a separate excess cover policy?

I have an excess of £250 which rises by a further £200 if I don't use the selected insurers repairers. Provided any accident repair exceeds my excesses, I'm able to recoup my outlay under an Excess Protection Policy costing £80. Are there any drawbacks to doing this please? .

An Excess Protection Policy can reimburse the excess you pay in the event of a claim, which is a benefit if repairs exceed the £250 primary excess and the additional £200 for using a non-selected repairer. However, there are potential drawbacks including paying the £80 annual fee and not utilising the EPP by not having a claim to make or if the excess of the claim isn't high enough. Another possible downfall is that Excess Protection Policies can have limitations on the types of claims eligible for reimbursemen, and certain conditions may apply.

The best thing to do would be to have a conversation with your insurer to clarify the reason for the increase in excess and request the information in writing so you are aware of the requirements if you need to make a claim.
