A friend has just bought a low mileage X reg Astra automatic. It stalls at irregular intervals. Most common event is stopping at traffic lights where the engine dies. I know stalling isn't the correct phrase as you can't stall an automatic. The Vauxhall dealer he bought it from can't find anything wrong but he's got 30 days to get his money back. However, he quite likes the car and would be grateful for any ideas to confront the dealer with.

Likely to be anything in the engine management system. The reason one pays top wack at a main dealer, is to avoid this. I suggest take it back and give them one more chance. You need time to run it and be sure it is fixed before the 30 days. Explain this to Vauxhall. Be careful it does not re-occurr at 42 days, when you are in a weaker position. If they can't quickly and obviously fix it, get your money back. There are many Vauxhalls in the world, especially from a main dealer.

Ring another vauxhall dealer and ask them if there is a software update that may need doing to this car.

Most common fault is a dirty idle speed control valve.
