Focus saloons - Richard
Am I the only person who doesn't think that the Focus saloon looks "ugly" or some other critical description? In fact, I think it has a greater "presence".

I'm still not overly keen on the styling of the hatchback so assuming that the saloon handles and rides as well as folk say that the hatch does, it can't all be bad?! Just a thought anyway.

(I'll now standby for a deluge of "are you mad's" and "I've never seen one"!!)
Re: Focus saloons - CM
It's pig ugly and the residuals will most likely back it up (like Golf vs Jetta/Bora)
Re: Focus saloons - Tony Campbell
I tend to agree that the saloon looks ugly, however thinking back to the Orion/Escort, I think the revers was true, the Orion looked more classier.

Re: Focus saloons - Phil
Are Bora residuals worse than Golfs? I like Boras.

Re: Focus saloons - Paul C
I agree, the Bora looks much better, and even better than the 3-Series and Passats in the class above.

Richard

The saloons are generally not popular - remember the 306 'sedan'? When did you last see a Focus or Astra saloon? Most buyers, it seems, prefer the versatility of the hatch. Things seem to be moving even more towards the benefits of space which has produced the move to the 'bread van' trend of the Civic and 307.

I believe Vectra and Mondeo saloons have a lower second hand value than the hatch versions, although both are visually very similar to the hatchback versions.

Giving the striking visual differences of the Focus hatch/saloon (polite way of putting it) I'd be concerned about residuals and saleability.

To stick my head over the parapet (like you) I have to say that whilst the Focus does handle well, it can get a bit bouncy on some roads. The ones I've driven don't like the rumble strips on roundabout approaches for example. Not a problem in, say, an Astra.

Re: Focus saloons - Andy P
Having just seen a Focus saloon on my journey home from work, the one thing that struck me was the huge gap between the tyre and the wheelarch, made even more obvious because of the large bulge above. I have to admit to preferring saloons over hatches (I've had a Cavalier hatch and saloon, and the hatch seems to creak more from the rear), but in the case of the Focus, it's the other way around.

Re: Focus saloons - T lucas
Its seem to be only in the UK that we put a premium on having the 'versatility'of a hatch, most other markets prefer saloons/sedans.Dont see many Focus hatch in the US.Luxery models always have to be saloons,S Class hatch anyone?
Re: Focus saloons - Dai Woo
Personally, I think the saloon is much prettier than the hatchback, which reminds me too much of 20 year old Citroens.
Re: Focus saloons - Stevieboy
I ordered a 1.8LX Saloon in Metalic Black last month - hoping for a March delivery!

My reasons for ordering a Saloon over a Hatch:

1) Saloon has deeper boot than the hatch (hence more luggage space)
2) Much better looking, sleaker car
3) Be different - unlike the two-a-penny Hatch
4) Saloon is longer car - and looks it - hence more 'road presence' Richard refers to

Fuel economy, 0-62 and RV will be better on the Hatch - but it's just so ugly ... looks like the designer forgot to finish off the backend.

Re: Focus saloons - Tom Shaw
I fully agree with Stevieboy on the back of the hatch, it looks like they ran out of time and just designed it on the quick. The saloon looks a lot better, but then I think the Focus is one of the most boring designs on the market.
Re: Focus saloons - mark ansell
I agree with you Richard it doesn't look at all bad. I wouldn't buy the saloon over the hatch though; but looking at saloons like the Scorpio/Granada, Focus is a much better job.
Re: Focus saloons - Antonio Montoya
In Spain these saloons outsell hatches in this "class" of car by four to one. peculiar eh ? same in the US apparently, ex the Jetta is much more popular than the golf.

Ford Focus Hatch = Ugly sister of FIAT Punto.
