Today's Auto Express carried a snippet that the BPC was in negotiations with JC over a new car show. They need him. He needs the exposure. So they have to be able to do a deal. Welcome back to the big man.

Indeed, it'd be good to see him back doing what he does best, but how will he do on his own? I think he's got a hard act to follow with the excellent Driven being the alternative (co-incidentially with the lovely Penny)
Yep, something to look forward to in the Autumn schedules

Leave Drive(L)n to the 'little lads' audience - Clarky is definitely' for amusement only' without sounding like an old f...t in an anorak. Who could forget some of his best lines to fascia camera while on the move, such as 'IT'S FAST, IT'S RORTY AND I WANT ONE.... or 'YES, WELL, IT'S A VAUXHALL VECTRA AND THAT'S ALL THERE IS TO SAY REALLY -(Fade)
Anybody else out there remember any other such timeless gems. The man is a supreme parody of himself. Wonderful !

If it's a car show I'm looking for, Driven strikes a good balance between being interesting and informative. If I'm looking for crass insults, I know where to look.

I'm presuming that he writes his own scripts, I guess he does as his style shines through in his weekly Sunday Times columns.
Personally I can't stand and have given up watching the 'car shows' without him. They're all full of 'just out of pimples' youths and laddettes trying to emulate The Master.
JC could put them down without drawing breath.

Hmm, with his first review being the new Vectra........
Could prove enjoyable......

Cringe! the perpetrator of ghastly metaphors back again? The standards on Tv are unquestionably dropping,so bring out your dead.

Divide and rule. But what are David and Simon going to watch while Clarkson is on? Or will they simply be down the pub?

I'll be reading this forum. Much more sense here!

Sadly just as much froth and no substance down the pub as there is from Clarkson.

lol. I agree, more Deals on Wheels from Brewer is what we need. I don't think Clarkson is going to re-invigorate the BBC's motoring coverage. Don't get me wrong, I don't quite agree with his point of view in the ST, he does write well and is often very funny.

If Clarkson merely "does write well", then who writes better?

I recall he used to write for Performance Car and his articles appeared at the back of the magazine. I remember laughing so much I was in tears at a piece he did describing his day attempting to get somewhere using the train.
He is direct and honest and doesn't beat about the bush - something which I believe cost him some of his pieces being edited out of Top Gear by "worried about repurcssions even though the Beeb is neutral" BBC staff. I think some of his comments regarding cars have been down to his personal ideas rather than the actual car itself but who cares? He is witty, funny and controversial and he can't come back quick enough as the TV motoring world needs a personality (which none of the Driven lot have got for sure).
Good luck to him - I'll be ready with the TV remote and a 6 pack (whatever happened to them BTW?)

It wasn't merely anything. Just that he writes well - not that he doesn't write as well as Joe Bloggs.
FWIW, the motoring coverage in the Guardian is absolutely dire. One page per week of uninformative drivel.

Errrr, what did you expect?
Don't all Garudina readers, ride on bikes, or own Fiat Pandas?

As Julian Lindley said..Clarkson is a wordsmith.
I would add that he simply thrives on the superfluous.
If he writes well HJ, you for one, certainly write much better, thank you.
I would wager that a considerable number of Backroom subscribers would agree.

Of course Clarkson "thrives on the superfluous." But his writing is wonderfully entertaining and original and not meant to be deep and meaningful.
Much as we all enjoy HJ's pithy contributions here and in the Telegraph, they are hardly in the same league.

described the Rover 75 in the SUnday Times as a Harvester restaurant on wheels, which I thought a bit harsh.

"Described the Rover 75 in the SUnday Times as a Harvester restaurant on wheels, which I thought a bit harsh"
Matt - hard on Rover 75s, or hard on Harvesters .... ?
"WIW, the motoring coverage in the Guardian is absolutely dire. One page per week of uninformative drivel"
Phil - Are you sure it's *just* the motoring coverage .... ?
