My Cortina (mk5 GLS) used to do this - as soon as you went to main beam, the rear fog lamp went out. It also had separate (front) driving lamps which came on with main beam. Actually worked very well in patchy fog late at night - when it was clear you lifted the lights and the rear fog went off. When you hit the next fog bank, you dipped the headlights and the fog light came on again.
