We replaced a worn-out battery on our V reg 92,000 mile Galaxy 2.3 Ghia X last week, after which we noticed that the ABS warning light came on. We phoned our local Ford dealership who said that this could be as a result of having disconnected the battery, and that we should run the car for about 150 miles during which it might reset itself.
Well, 290 miles later and the warning light is still on. On the 'phone this morning we've been told it'll need a diagnostic test and, depending on the results, could cost up to £800 plus 5 hours' labour to fix!
I've had mixed experiences with this dealer (and are very protective over our family transport!) so would like to know if anyone else has had a similar problem and what was done to fix it?

First off, check that the charging system is working properly (typically 13.4 - 14.5V at the battery with the engine running - over- or under-votlage will cause the ABS lamp to come on).
If its OK then try disconnecting the battery for 10 mins and then reconnecting.
If this fails then go to a dealer or independent service 'shop that can do electronic diagnostics. £50 should cover a diagnosis and reset.
If there is a 'real' fault with the system then there is the potential for a large bill (up to many £100's, depending up exactly what is wrong). You can't avoid it though - ABS lamp check is part of the MoT.

Check operation of brake lights, failure of these can cause ABS light stay on.
