Kerbing damage - a pity really - Adam {P}
My mate has a Renault Clio sport and as luck would have it, the above happened on new alloys to him today when I was in the car. It wasn't high speed but we were turning left and tried to squeeze past a car tuning right. We did, but sadly touched the kerb. I ony felt it ever so gently because I was expecting it to happen but the other person in the car never even noticed so it wasn't that much of a grinding horrible noise.

Because my mate was nearly crying at imagining the alloys (we couldn't pull over) I pointed out, in my best consoling way that he may have done more damage to the more mechanical parts of the steering. (Word of warning, don't do this at 50mph - especially if the person loves their car - I could swear I saw a tear drop)

Anyway - because we were on a straight, we decided to do a cursory test which basically was taking it up to about 65 - no wheel shake or anything like that. Braking hard, nothing. Even took a country road back and he said there were no problems whatsoever.

My question is, if all of those checks turned out alright, has he been lucky and gotten away with just kerbing the alloy (I've pointed him to a place which did a cracking job on mine for 30 quid)? I said I'd ask in case there was any unseen damage he may have cause.

Any thoughts/comments would, as always, be most welcome.

No thoughts really, except to wonder where you found someone who only charges £30 to fix an alloy when I've been quoted £70 to make my fourth one look like the three that got refurbished when the lorry driver took a shine to the side of my car.

Friends PG...friends. That brings the total up to...er....carry the one...3. I have 3 friends! :-)

If you lived anywhere near me, I could get them done for you...but you don't...so neh!

For 30 quid, sanded down, blasted or something, polished, painted and all sorts. Looked better than the others to be honest. However, 70quid seems a bit steep for any alloy wheel refurbisher whether they know you or not.

I could move!

I get to escape Wolverhampton, and save myself £40 into the bargain. Result!

"I've pointed him to a place which did a cracking job on mine for 30 quid"

Not perhaps the best adjective to use in the circumstances?

You're right - it isn't - LOL!

When we got back to mine, I made some coffee, popped my head out of the kitchen, "Do you want it ground or normal?"

Couldn't think of any more...other than "That was a close escrape"

It will happen to me tomorrow.

Yep..and then it'll be:

"Should you really have been doing more than 10mph around that corner? There could be a small child/dog (altho you could follow Dave's example and run it over) lurking within a 5 mile radius, just waiting to jump out and get killed by your excessive use of speed, you reckless young rule breaker, you. Has anyone seen Patently round lately"

Ohhh...you'll all regret mentioning NoWheels and I in the same sentence three times in as many days! ;)

If truth be knowm NW...sorry...PG, I think we were reckless on the dual carriageway doing 65 when some child could quite easily have walked up to the bridge, constructed some sort of rudimentary stand, hopped on and over the bridge in front of our Mach 4 car.

Fear not however - I berated my friend for not considering such possibilities....and then got punched.

pologirl - where was that quote from? there is a wheel place on the bilston road that me and mates have used a few times - they do a cracking job and are fairly cheap.

Bluehaddock... that was from the place on the Bilston Rd, by the place that used to be a petrol station and is now a car wash. Has stacks of tyres and alloys outside during the day if we're talking about the same place.

Mind you, that quote came via the bodyshop when I asked them how much it would be for me to pay and get the 4th wheel done at the same time as the 3 that were being done on my insurance at the same place... so knowing them they added a 50% profit for themselves.

Don't think it was anywhere near that price although it was a couple of years ago. Like you said that price probably includes a fair cut for themselves, nip down there and ask them how much i bet it'll be loads cheaper.

Wolverhampton....that's not far - you only have to pop down the road to Lancashire...well - Merseyside is where the place is. I put petrol at about £39 to get here;-)

Any BackRoomer is welcome on my doorstep - but that's all - none of you weirdos are coming into my house...

:-)

£70 is still pretty high - was that just for ONE wheel?

I live in Cheshire and work in Liverpool.

Our MINI Cooper S is very prone to alloy wheel damage as the alloys overhang the runflat tyres. My wife manage to wreck one of the alloys in the first few months of purchase by driving into a kerb at 30 mph (nearly £200 at BMW!) and has since managed to scrape 3 of the wheels.

One of my friends suggested I use a company called Proclean in Prescot who charge £30 per wheel no matter whether or not you know them personally. He said they worked well for his Honda Civic Type R. Is this the same company you use?

Unfortunately, as the MINI only has 4 wheels, I I will have to leave the car with them and catch a train/bus!

Proclean Alloys is the company yes - do you know exactly where it is because you can miss the small street that it is on. I thought I was having a favour done for me at £30 - I got told it was £50 for everyone else!

If truth be known, I don't know anyone at Proclean - it was when my car was in the garage, one of the alloys was kerbed to the point where it made...a...well - sharp point which could have burst the tyre so my Dad's mate took it in.

If it makes you feel any better, ProClean will do a fantastic job - the wheel will look brand new.

If you need any directions, just give me a shout - although I suspect your mate will know as well!
