i only buy korean/jap - so due to their non-existent diesel range, i havent got a clue about them.
he needs ...
diesel (or high mpg petrol) he does minimum 50 miles a day
less than 60k
ideally no more than 4 years old
5 door
refinement not important
band 5/6 insurance maximum (only 23)
decent size aka fiesta upto lantra size.
told him i would ask you boys ofr opinion.
i recommended peugeout 206 1.4 hid
or
hyundai lantra 2.0 diesel (but the insurance would kill him)
he has 3 grand to spend - maybe a little more if worth the extra.
Rover 25 or 45 make sense?
|
i very much doubt he'd get a 206 Hdi for 3k but he would get a decent 306 Turbo diesel for the money, how about a Mk2 Mondeo - the last of the line ones are going through auctions fairly cheap at the moment.
|
Also he should be able to get either a decent citroen Xsara or a Renault megane for that sort of money
|
I doubt you will get a Xsara HDi for 3k. But the older XUD 1.9 would be in range and they're good engines.
All Rover diesels are good. depending on the age it could be the Peugeot/Citroen engine in the 400 or it could be Rover L series. The 25 would be just the latter. All good engines. I really recommend the L series, they are fast and reliable. XUD well known for long life.

well rover 25 diesels knocking around the trader with 80-90k on W plates for £2995
I reckon he could pick up a 55-75k mileer for 600 less in the auctions.
Is it correct to presume birmingham BCA is the best place to pick up rovers?
I think the mondeo insurance would cripple him.
|
I can recommend a 306 with the XUD (turbo) engine too. Lots and lots of them around now so loads of choice. Very reliable if looked after, just check for full service history when you buy and should last well-many around with enormous mileages.
Good thing about these is performance is quite good and only group 4 insurance.
|
i always thought the 306 was a dog for reliability?
i dont trust french eletrics - to many stories, to many friends with lots of faults (more so renault).
i will reccomend it to him though - worth considering.
are they serviced every 6 thousand miles?
|
No more unreliable than most other cars. Oil change every 6k very important though.
Engines very strong and will run and run.
|
|
ive only ever driven new or no more than 10k hyundai diesels
both the 2.0
and the
1.5
what mileage can you expect from them? (my concern is - buying a peugeout or vw diesel you can expect 150k minimum - not sure if hyundai diesel has same ability).
looking through our auction price guide, we sold two hyundai accent 1.5 diesels 52 plates with 9.5k and 11.5k - for around £4400 each 4 months ago.

is the 306 ugd or whatever its called the 1.9?
whats the 1.9 bhp?
and whats the 2.0 hdi bhp?
whicxh is the better engine?
|
drove today 150 mile round trip in a kia shuma ii ice 1.6
not as bad as people think.
certianly enough space.
|
A bit older but worth considering is the Citroen ZX. Came with the same engines as the 306 but not the HDi. Cheaper than the 306 as not as trendy but some say even better to drive.
Find a nicely kept 1.9 TD and you will even have some change left over :-)
|
|
The 1.9 TD is the XUD engine, and is as good an example of an indirect injection diesel as you will find. If well maintained they are very reliable, quiet and smooth, compared with most of their ilk. It develops 90 bhp.
The early 2.0 HDIs fitted to the 306 were also 90 bhp units, but later ones would be 110 bhp (I think), but I am not sure about this.
You may also get a Xsara for that price and they definitely had the 110 bhp engine as an option, at least in later models.
The HDI engine is a more refined engine with less turbo lag. Below 2000 rpm the 1.9 TD is rather lacking in punch.

The diesel engine in the Mk 2 Mondeo is hardly a paragon of refinement though.

looks like he is going french.
btw - are their any other 1.4 or similiar size engines like the honda jazz's which return 50mpg on the combined cycle.
for around 3k!
|
|
For £3k you could buy a VERY good Citroen Xantia 1.9TD with fsh and under 60,000 miles..Unwanted and unloved..
I would: but of course deprecaition will continue so it's a car to drive mega mileages in which if serviced regularly it will. There are lots which have done 150k miles plus...
But fsh vital....
