About to do my once a decade plunge into buying a car and wondering if it's worth getting an extended warranty? The car I'll be getting is just out of Mercedes warranty and dealer is offering 6 months It used to be that some providers were definitely better than others but last time Iooked at this dinosaurs still walked the Earth.

Thanks

IMHO aftermarket warranties are not worth the paper they are written on as they have many exclusions.

Put some money aside in savings account as your own insurance.

However, manufacturers often sell extended warranties directly (though basically an insurance policy, packaged as if manufacturer selling it). This could be worth exploring if fits in your budget.

Any chance of obtaining the Mercedes extended warranty? Warranties offered by the manufacturer tend to be more comprehensive than others.

I think you'll find the dealer's liable for any problems in the first six months after sale. It looks like they're expecting you to pay for that cover.

Many on here have said it before,

Any aftermarket warranty is very expensive toilet paper.

If buying a used approved car from a manufacturers main dealer then ok with balance of maker warranty and possibility to extend.

Anything over more than that, exclusions for wear and tear and known faults and ANY lack of even prior servicing will invalidate any aftermarker warrant. see terms and conditions. Then you havr the hourly rates they will pay and the excess deductions and it will apply to EACH claim, probably with a total claim limit.

As a matter of interest what is the age mileage and spec of the car, petrol/diesel maual/auto even though the OP says "just out of warranty" ? ANd does it have a full main dealer MB warranty, otherwise no goodwill from MB.

Agreed. Not only that, you are presumably tied to having an expensive 'service' every year no matter how few miles driven, at which they may or may not use quality products, especially the oil and filter, for your car.

When I bought my B-class plug-in in 2021, a three year extension to the warranty had a list price of €808, reduced in a special offer by 50%. Have you made any inquiries at Mercedes? I would be surprised if the main dealer did not try and sell you the warranty package.

Hate guarantees.
Many moons ago the advice to buyers was to do a Buy as Seen deal with “dealer”.
No prep, no service, no guarantee.
Buyers were advised tho’ to stash cash in readiness for standard used car essential maintenance eg tyres, exhausts, leaks -I could go on….
My advice?
Use common sense, open the bonnet, test the oil, feel the tyres, look for warning lights and ask for service and repair “ invoices”
I’ve also learnt a great deal about a cars reliability record by looking at its MOT history.
