How is the £40k list price defined? Is it the manufacturer's advertised retail price or something else?

If RRP is £39k and adding optional extras ended up final price paid being over £40k, is it still considered liable for additional VED?

It is a shame that £40k threshold has not been revised in spite of rampant inflation. Even so called budget cars can cost over £40k easily with some not so luxurious options!

Yes It is the list price

Yes it is the list price plus options which if reach £40k list is additional VED

Yes another tax con and you have to be careful when buying the second hand car for the 5 years it is valid. The motorist today is being attacked from everywhere. I no longer think we are welcome on the road

I'm pretty sure that's a contradiction in terms....

Just wait till electric cars increase in numbers and Fuel Tax revenues collapse.

VED is likely where the Chancellor will turn.

Which budget cars are costing over £40k (with options)?

Which budget cars are costing over £40k (with options)?

Kia Sportage, for example

Toyota RAV4 too

You can argue whether they are budget cars but they are by no means luxury cars.

No argument needed, neither are budget cars.

So do you consider a budget car to be any which isn't a luxury car?

lets just say the buying public is running out of budget car options. It looks like China may soon solve the problem

If, for some insane reason, someone with not much money wanted a brand new car, there are various options under £15k. Seems like a reasonable place to draw the 'budget' line.

I'm fortunate enough to be not-exactly-skint and the thought of spending more than £40k on a car gives me palpitations.

Likewise - but there is a Yorkshire mindset in our household

Yes, but they will all be electric.

Why these 12 mainstream family cars now fall in the ‘luxury’ tax bracket

www.telegraph.co.uk/cars/features/vehicle-excise-d.../

Sporage, RAV4 etc. are mentioned here. When people talk about luxury cars, Kia or Toyota don't come on people's minds, rather they think of Merc, BMW, Audi, JLR, Volvo - if not Ferrari, Maserati, Bentley etc. Considering, Sportage and RAV4 are not even most expensive cars in respective line ups.

Nobody is arguing that list prices for new cars are getting ever higher, but there is a long way between luxury and budget. The only way I might consider anything north of £20k as a budget car, would be if I was stinking rich!.

Thanks to the explosion in popularity of leasing/PCD, (what I would consider) budget cars are very much a dying breed. That may change if the Chinese brands get serious about making inroads into all segments of the UK new car market, but as I said, they will all be electric. Which is clearly not going to suit everyone at the moment, but maybe in 10 years time?.

It’s a big leap from ‘budget’ to ‘luxury’.
I know it’s semantics, but in my world it goes -
Budget (Dacia, as an example)
Mainstream (Ford, Vauxhall)
Premium (BMW, Lexus)
Luxury (Rolls-Royce, Bentley).
