Retail Parks with black tyre marks - Warning

There is another post on here about a car with three brake replacements.....

I have been to a couple of retail parks in my area. I was shocked to see the state of their car parks covered as they were covered with black tyre marks. It looked unsightly.

People have been having fun doing donut tyre marks, drifting.....

You can see young drivers with their cars congregating, loud music etc....

One retail park has resorted to putting plastic speed bumps, over the entire car park. They are not the soft gentle kind, but the very harsh types.

Should these drivers get charged with cleaning up the tyre marks?

I consider tyre marks to be entirely harmless. And if these unofficial events take place after hours, and don't inconvenience anyone, who are we to stop someone having fun?

Maybe speed bumps need to be installed at Silverstone to stop those young tearaways like Lewis Hamilton. Tattoos , dreadlocks, jewellery etc.

Live and let live.

Some parking areas get used by lorry drivers for overnight parking...don't blame the lorry drivers by the way, you try finding somewhere safe to park a 60 ft vehicle up overnight now the councils have closed almost all town lorry parks...a single fully loaded artic turning tightly will scrub far more rubber onto the surface than dozens of youngsters having a lark could manage.

I tend to agree with GWS, there's precious little room left in the country now, if these youngsters are using an otherwise deserted car park to have a bit of fun and socialise, well i'm not going to complain, beats the hell out of stabbing each other over gang rivalry as they fight to get the money idiot middle class fools (including politicians) throw about for a drug fix.

Yes, the marks are harmless. The activity that causes them just seems rather foolish in the overall picture of global warming, waste of resources, etc. etc. As does F1, of course, but we daren't say that on here.

I learnt to drive aged 13 on supermarket car parks when the stores were closed. By 15 I was driving HGVs around yards and could (and can) crush a can at 40mph. with either front wheel.

Can't do that now. Where do young people go to to 'play' these days?

There’s. Retail park near me where this happens every night. The police largely leave them be as it’s safer they’re in a large empty car park than on the road. It gets it out of their system.

They've stopped it round my way so they occasionally gather on certain sideroads, I think if it wasn't for the (what used to be a massive car park) now called the Walnuts shopping centre the teenagers would be using that

as they used to in the sixties, plenty of wheel spinning and handbrake turns happened there, and a lot of people didn't like it because they couldn't learn to drive after the Walnuts went up

we could use another car park like that, gives them something to do

I'm a member of (responsible) motoring clubs. Before now, we've hired large car parks from private companies for tarmac autotests, usually held on a Sunday. You should see the rubber marks that leaves behind!

The walnuts car park where my wife managed to get the car stuck on one of the ramps as she took the turning to tight and caused expensive damage to the car.

Used to be a regular occurrence, though the car park Im talking about was the whole of the Walnuts before the shopping centre was built and turned into a mess, imo

but it was used by teenagers to burn up tyres and race around, even learners could do as they pleased without worrying about other cars, that was how large it was. police that I remember took no notice but it was all open car park

now we don't have much room for disabled cars to park, and high St is dying off...

Yes Orpington high street is dead. The walnuts shopping centre doesn't have much going for it but I do like the nando's and the cinema.

I don’t have a problem with it, better than terrorising the rest of us on the roads.
Only problem I have if it’s anything like our local car parks are the piles of pizza boxes and Macdonalds cartons they leave behind. We were all young once and done daft things.
My first car wasn’t capable of leaving tyre marks!

I used to live not too far away from one of a few 'meeting places' and i can tell you it was no fun at all, the noise was terrible, all revving engines and screeching tyres.

So while i hear what others are saying re allowing them to let off some steam, i'd only go along with that if the place in uestion was well away from residential areas.

different opinion ... these kids need somewhere safe to socialise and indulge in these activities - closed shopping centre car parks well away from others with wide open paces is actually a sensible place for them, well away from residential or busy traffic streets. Added benefit is that the Police know where they are and can watch on CCTV and / or pay social visits to ensure there are no drugs or other illegal activities taking place.

Yes, as was said above :- "I consider tyre marks to be entirely harmless. And if these unofficial events take place after hours, and don't inconvenience anyone, who are we to stop someone having fun?"

Harmless fun? .... 17 injured, some seriously.

Hardly a surprise though. Who in their right mind expects these car park jollies to be attended by participants who creep along the adjoining public roads at a strict 30 mph on their way to the event? And having enjoyed their harmless fun then creep back home religiously sticking to the speed limits?

We all know they spill out on to public roads and turn adjoining roads into race tracks so it's not surprising to see an incident like this happen ..... it was just a matter of time.

But it was was just a bit of harmless fun.

I presume all the posters with similar views will now retract their original posts and add more sensible comments.

We had huge issues locally and the Police obtained a Public Service Protection Order that gave them additional powers relation to gatherings etc and it seems to have all but stopped. What it has not stopped is the odd idiot driving like a lunatic or racing another similar idiot but in reality you will always get that.

I wrote about 5 years ago about a friends son who was critically injured in a "cruise" event.

Sadly he died a while afterwards.

But there was no suggestion that the driver had been speeding in the official investigation.

Tragically for his family, another bright young well behaved youngster lost.

I don't retract my comment at all ... as we saw recently there is always some selfish idiots to spoil things for everyone else but this does not have to be directly related to having a safe space to socialise ..
