BMW 3 Series E90 - Wheel pressure sensor not working - BMWUser2014

BMW 320d ED - 2014 model

I bought it as BMW approved vehicle (AUC checked - 1year warranty) from a dealer in Scotland; when I gave the vehicle for service, I received a report as sensor not working as wheel size is wrong, from my local BMW dealer (in Essex).

I raised the issue with BMW; but seller argued the wheel size is as per BMW standard and no issues with size. It could be other problem in sensor.

BMW rejected the issue as it is not manufacturing defect and it seller vehicle preparation issue; The seller asking me to drive from south east to Scotland to fix their mistake!

Because of this issue, the tyre pressure not displayed on the dashboard.

Any suggestion please?

Thanks in advance

Each wheel has a pressure sensor,so is it one or more wheels not displaying correctly.?Also, did the car come with a new Mot certificate? Cars made after Jan 2012 must have a working Tpms system (if fitted). If it is not working, then this is an mot fail.

Not 100% sure but I think BMW's of this vintage still had ABS based TPMS, valve based was only fitted when TPMS became madatory on all cars.

If that is the case you don't get a pressure display, you simply get a warning when the rotational speed falls outside the set parameters (i.e. about 30% pressure loss).

As said already. The 2014 3 series (which is incidentally the F30 model, the E90 went out of production in 2011-2012) had a wheel rotational system for TPMS, not valve-based.

All the information on how to reset the system is in the on-board iDrive user handbook

It went first MOT last year (done be BMW dealer) and passed. When I check the pressure on the dashboard display it is not showing any values just "--"; So I asked the dealer during end of warranty check and they gave report the Sensor are not working correctly which is due to wrong wheel size (18 inch fitted; default size was 17 inch).

But the seller referred BMW website to show, the wheel size is correct as per BMW specification (17 - 21 inch allowed).

Can you please clarify is it related to TPMS? If TPMS is not workinging and is mandatory for MOT clearence, then it is critical issue I suppose!

Do you suggest, go back to BMW or the dealer (who sold the vehicle)?

Please advise.

As per RobJP this is a wheel rotational system. I guess what the BMW dealer is saying is not wrong wheel size fitted but wrong tyre size fitted on the 18" wheel i.e. it has wrong aspect ratio which makes the outside diameter of wheel greater than standard spec. I have this on a used E93 that I recently bought but the system still works. Have you followed the re-calibration as per manual. That could well sort it out.

Thanks Steven.

I tried by resetting it through dashboard. It works! Thanks All. Problem solved.
