Hi. Earlier today I picked up a used 60 reg Diesel Auto. I drove it home easily and parked it on my relatively steep driveway. The handbrake is OK but does not feel amazingly secure but I have no idea how to put this in Park (as in an older torque converter box). Any advice, please?

I would guess this is not a proper auto, but an electronic robotised manual gearbox. So there is no "P" park position to lock the box.Is it possible to select a gear before ignition switch off and removal of key?

That's exactly how you have to do it, select first or reverse then turn off engine, remember to select neutral to start again, doesn't feel natural at all.

Its worth noting Peugeot (and no doubt Citroen will follow with its new models) are moving away from their dreadful automated manual gear boxes and going back to torque convertors which you can now get in the 308.

Thats interesting Davey, not following the herd down the CVT route then, will canny used buyers be searching out torque converter PSA's in preference to the current CVT and DSG cars that possibly won't be able to be given away once up to about 6 years old?

There are not enough swear words in all the dictionaries of the entire world to adequately convey my hatred of the automated manual gearbox of doom, which joy of joys i get to drive every day at work (thank the good Lord it at pays well)...where's the roll eyes/face palm smileys.

GB, have you ever thought of writing a book based on your sufferings from gormless designers/manufacturers/roadusers?

You have an admirable turn of phrase and literary style and a wealth of experience, such a book would be vastly entertaining.

Very kind of you Galileo, though i suspect if any of my daft ramblings amuse, surprising, then the number who find them so could be counted on one sheepskin mittened hand.

Doubt i have the wit for a book.

I agree with Galileo, GB - you surely do have the talent and wit for a book.

Maybe when you retire, you could write a book of stories on the lines of James Herriot or Gervase Phinn. I'm not sure how much of your career has been in HGV driving, but this industry as far as I know hasn't yet been immortalised in that way.

I'll have a pint of what you and Galileo are drinking Avant, but thanks for the vote of confidence, somehow the adventures and odd views of a luddite old lorry driver capturing the public's imagination i can't imagine, but will give it thought.

How long?, 39 years to date, but pales into insignificance with my barmy wonderful well spoken (convent educated) sister who's still doing the job now both here and abroad, she has been driving lorries since around '69 when she took the Class 1 HGV test, and immensily proud i am of her, she carved her own niche and was highly respected in the fairly small european drivers community of the main period, still is but she keeps a low profile.
