I'm thinking of changing out the very old Saab whcih is reaching the end of its life for another not quite so old Saab. In the old days you could pitch up at a dealer, buy something, part exchange the old one, ring up broker and get insurance transferred on the spot. Then just drive home on the remanants of the old tax disc.

Can't do that now. It's still possible to do the insurance transfer instantly, but how long does it take for this to be registered so that one can tax the new buggy before you drive off in it? I don't want to have to make two visits as the replacement car may be some way away.

In my (limited) experience, it's pretty much instant.

A friend was buying a car earlier this year. Had arranged for the new insurance to start from 9am. We were in the post office at 9:30, and taxed it without any problems.

But I don't think if taxing it in the post office (which you'll have to do, as the V5 isn't in your name) that they actually check the insurance : it seems that if you're honest enough to be taxing a car, then you're assumed to be honest enough to insure it !

Do remember that bit : you will HAVE to tax it in the post office, using the V5 'green slip'. If the V5 isn't in your name, then it is not possible to tax it online.

I disagree.

I bought from a dealer and was able to purchase VED online, at the dealership (on a Sunday).

Having just changed cars and for the first time in years not getting a week or so dealer insurance, I was out of touch with how insurance worked. The dealer was an hour away so also didn't want two visits.

Called the insurance up and changed the policy to the new car. On the day I changed my insurance was valid on my old car until I took ownership of the new one.

Car tax was sorted by the dealer online on the morning I picked up as insurance was in place.

As BT, my wife bought her mx, paid with a debit card and taxed it on line there and then at the dealership using the new keeper part of the V5C. Apparently you can also do it on an automated phone service 24/7
