R172 MERCEDES SLK 250 AMG - BRAKE DUST - BBBB

After the shortest of drives barely using the brakes the alloy wheels especially the fronts are covered in black dust & it's driving me nuts. Go on a short holiday & at the end of the first day the wheels look rubbish, so I take a collapsable bucket & sponge & pathetic it might be wash the wheels in the hotel/B & B car park!!!

Am advised that the large ventilated discs acerbate the problem, that ceramic pads are available from Australia at a price & difficult to fit, & that Redstuff pads, more easily available but only for the fronts, will minimise dust.

Whats the real truth?

They used to make thin metal plates to go behind the wheel and collect the dust whether you can still buy them I wouldn't know ,I have a pair on the front of my my BMW E39 and the alloys are like new .

And if you drive it hard the brake cooling will be severely affected. Ever suffered 'brake fade'?

I've heard good reports about Redstuff reducing dust. Are they approved by MB and would it affect your insurance by using some 'none approved parts?

You seriously take a bucket and sponge on holiday with you? Treat the dust as an indicator you're driving the AMG like it's supposed to be.

I haven't washed my car for months, I'm waiting for a good shower of rain to soften the dead flies on the front to make them easier to remove. Do it much more regularly in the Winter, to remove salt.
