VW Mk 7 Golf TDI 2.0 SE dsg. - Very Disappointed - Pippip

Am I the only person disappointed with their new Golfs economy and performance? I only seem to get 350/400 miles per full tank but my old Mk5 GTD dsg did 600/650 per tank.

It also seems to labour in high gears when it should automatically change down.

Have spoken to them at VW UK and was told they are all like this, is that correct or will they eventually recall cars for a replacement ECU or a remap.

I thought new cars were meant to be getting more efficient but in this case (40 mpg) they are not .

Am I alone?

My new Leon (which is a Golf Mk 7 in a different frock) is proving to be really economical. Its the 140ps petrol version and in mixed running its doing about 45 mpg. On a recent run over the peak it did just over 50 mpg. If I believed the dash confuser it would be even better but it flatters by about 6% over calculated figures.

These figures are nearly as good as my old BMW 118D in identical usage.

Really happy I did not buy another diesel.

The newer VAG petrol engines seem to be particularly economical. The 2.0 TSI (197 bhp) in my Octavia gives 32 mpg in town and a sporting 38 on a long run. I could clear 40 mpg if I drove more slowly and kept the speed down to 60 65 mph on motorways - but then if I wanted to do that I wouldn't have had the vRS in the first place.

I haven't tried a 1.4 TFSI (which I presume yours is, Skidpan) but mine wil pull strongly from low revs and I very seldom need to put my foot to the floor to make good progress. Maybe the torquey nature of these engines contributes to the good economy. SWMBO's Mini Cooper Roadster could manage only 37 mpg on the last long trip we did in it - a much less tractable engine which works better at higher revs.

Going back to the disappointing diesel, economy should improve after about 5,000 miles. If it doesn't, you should take it back to the supplying dealer for a diagnostic check.

Euro V diesel won't hold a candle to a Euro IV tuned but otherwise identical engine sadly. Once it loosens up, it shouldn't be too far behind though.

It also seems to labour in high gears when it should automatically change down.

That's to get the best possible economy-most people cruise in too low a gear. Relax-it will ger better!
