Hi does anyone know if one of the rear electric brake caliper is faulty does the motor still try to operate on the second brake caliper or is the whole system shut down pending replacement of faulty brake caliper.

Im asking this question as I took it for brake pads replacement recently and the mechanic could not get the rear calipers to release so new pads could be fitted.

He was using an electric tool which was coming up with red light? Anyway he told me at least one caliper should attempt to release if only one was faulty and indicated to me that it could be possible that both had malfunctioned.

However he did mention that it was rare for both to fail at same time.

Am I unlucky or is the brake caliper system temporarily shut down pending repair on the VW Passat B6?

Thanks

There is a common problem with the early EPB motors where the plastic body cracks & allows water & dirt in leading to the mechanism seizing. Could be that yours are on the way out but still have some but not full movement.

Does the parking brake work at all?

If they are still partly working the plastic bodies can be removed & the mech cleaned & lubed. The cracks in the plastic bodies then need fixing with some sort of waterproof sealer.

New aftermarket motors are available from Eurocarparts for around £250 each.

Hi thanks for replies. There is movement or attempts to operate from either caliper when pressing EPB button just continuous pinging error message saying parking brake faulty. Ive replaced the EPB button as it is the first thing to replace apparently. New tyres and brake pads have been fitted except to rear braking as no access available due to calipers not releasing. The car drives fine and I use it daily; I just put it in gear to make sure its still there when I come back! Lol

I do not know why you changed the button as is was working before i.e. triggering the fault message and pinging. I suspect the controller has developed a fault or you have a chaffed EB cable. Have a diagnostic code read and it should identify the faulty item. Regards Peter

When you want to replace the back break pads you should take your car to the scanner shop where they have a computer , so they open the back cylinder in order to replace it easily . if you still have the faulty problem , maybe you have change the clutch pomp and the sensor on it not working ; both break parking system and the clutch get the same supply .

The motor can be removed and the caliper wound back by hand using a (T45?) splined key. If your mechanic doesn't know this then maybe you have the wrong mechanic?

The rear calipers need to be set up using a special tool (aftermarket ones are available, you don't have to have VAGCOM), though there is a technique around for indexing them without it, search for a good VW Audi forum.
