I'm thinking about selling my 1996 (N reg) Xantia 1.9TD Estate, it's the "base" model and I mean base - no electric windows, sunroof, aircon, ABS etc. though it has got remote central locking and an immobiliser.
Now the important bits; 1 previous owner (ex-fleet), "doom" blue, 136K with full service history (MD till 109K then Citroen specialist, serviced every 6K). All the bits and pieces are working fine, MOT till Nov'03, Tax till May'03. Items such as clutch/cambelt/spheres/discs/radiator have all been replaced/renewed within the last couple of years/12K.
Parker's say £1795 fair and £1700 trade - now I appreciate that the market is fairly volatile and £1700 may be pie in the sky.
Any opinions would be welcome, thanks in advance.

Chad,
The Xantia prices have to be very low to sell, having said that the estate is often in demand. They were introduced later than the hatch so at the cheaper end of the scale there are less estates.
I could have easily sold your car late last year for a bit over £2K...but these things never tie in do they!
From my experience actually your car is an ideal one for "budget" ownership. It is the desireable estate, has a well proven engine, excellent ride, very roomy...and being that base model lots of the things that might go wrong aren't fitted.
It will make a super bargain load carrier for someone.
I think your starting price is about the right area and then get flexible if you have a serious buyer there with the cash...not a bankers draft!
I wish I had another customer for it right now.

Hi Chad
I don't suppose you were thinking about this, but you'd probably get the best price for your Xantia from a Citroen dealer against a new Citroen!
I bought a new C5 back in May last year. In addition to the substantial cashback on the C5 I got £1350 for my (then)9 year old Xantia SX saloon (L Reg, 1993, one owner, 105,000 miles on the clock, petrol)I didn't even expect to get over £1000!
Citroens are great value for money - provided you intend to keep them for a few years. Depreciation in the first year or so is likely to be devastating! Solution is to buy one and use the 3 year warranty to the full to make sure you've got everything well-sorted by the end of the third year.
I don't know if I'll change the C5 at 3 years - depends what sort if offers Citroen are doing then, but if the car is running well and depreciation is severe, I might just stick with it. This is what I did with the Xantia and it turned out to be the most reliable and satisfying car I've ever owned!
Good luck!

Put an ad in the paper for £1995. You might not get it, but if it doesn't cost too much to advertise it, there's no harm in hoping. Even though your car is basic spec, the engine and body style are exactly what the market wants.
As a trade in, £1200 is realistic if it's in really nice condition but it depends how much margin the person selling your new car has.

Thank you all for your responses,
The only reason I'm selling the Xantia is because I aquired an Omega last summer and started using that regularly - I've rather got used to the refinement (must be middle age creeping up on me...) that the Xantia gets used less and less.
I've been trying to get SWMBO to switch from her Punto to the Xantia and then sell the Punto instead but unfortunately she doesn't like driving "big" cars and I can't persuade her otherwise.
I know I'm preaching to the converted here but I really loathe to sell the Xantia as it has been without doubt, overall the best car I have ever owned. I just can't justify the running costs or argue with SWMBO's claims that it's cluttering up the driveway!
I just regret not having looked around a bit more at the time and bought a "SX" or similar with electric windows, ABS and perhaps aircon, then I probably wouldn't have been tempted by the Omega.
I'll try for around £1750 - I'd probably be more than happy for anything over £1500.
Thanks again,

Chad - sounds as if you are in a similar position to SWMBO and me. Two of us and three cars - the oldest is a 93K 205 in nice nick and fun to drive, but only kept as an aged retainer for nostalgic reasons. Everyone knows its value is probably now in three figures, but it's still worth more to me than it will fetch. One day it will go, but I hope it will be to a good home!
