Porsche 718 Cayman - Talk me out of this.... - paul45

Hi All,

I'm fancying one last fling with petrol before the fun police step in and ban it, and I probably need to be talked out of it....

I'm looking at a 3-4 year old 718 Cayman, which given I'm relatively close to retirement, I would keep for a while (might even see me out...).

I'd be really grateful if there are issues I should I look out for, and what's anyone's experience of buying/owning one of these one the long(ish) term - say 5 years +

SWMBO has almost given me permission, so it's down to this marvellous forum to talk me out of it and or give me some advice !!

Thanks in advance.

Cheers P

If that is what you want, you can afford two buy and run* it, go for it.

I'd suggest approved used though.

I’m guess you’re looking at £40 k plus here . I’d definitely be going main dealer approved used .

If you have the funds to buy and maintain such a vehicle without the cost impacting otherwise on your lives then why not.

Assuming you have a decent home and some savings, the current regime, or the previous pointless lot when they're back in, will take as much as they can from both your pension and whatever you might leave behind in the fullness of time, you can't take it with you so why on earth not enjoy some fruits you enjoy from presumably many years of hard graft and keep the govts sweaty mitts off your hard earned.

Hopefully you have some decent roads to enjoy such a machine on, quite honestly in Northamptonshire apart from exclusive rural parts of the county traffic levels and condition of the roads give no encouragment for pleasurable driving, such a vehicle would be wasted here.

Not many Porsche type owners on this forum, certainly not a marque i could aspire to, so as for the car itself haven't a clue (apart from suggest to overmaintain it so it lasts), but as for the concept of treating yourself if you have the funds you don't need, do it.

Not quite the same, but my dad had a 981 Cayman and didn't get on with it. He liked it to drive, but the build quality and finish were poor, the dealers and Porsche UK terrible.

He now has an Alpine A110. They are not without their issues, apparently, but he loves it and says it is much better than the Porsche in every way (other than the satnav).

Thanks everyone - sounds like dealer sourced option is the way to go.

Alpine sounds like an interesting choice as well, hadn't thought of that, definitely worth a look.

All the best,

Paul

Porsche main dealers are painfully expensive for servicing and repairs. Do you have a Porsche specialist nearby?

As much as I get the appeal, I think I’d rather have a Mazda MX5 which although slower is every bit as much fun on the road but much cheaper to buy and run. Plus a non franchise service record will make little to no difference to the resale values of a Mazda.

What are you going to do with it? Is it to be your daily, or a toy for high days and holidays? Or a treasured possession that is cosseted and little used?

As it's been mentioned, I've an MX-5 'toy' I bought nearly new, and so far have kept for 7 years. It's taken us to the Netherlands, Germany, Italy (twice), Austria, France, Northern Ireland, Scottish Highlands and touring in France. Norway was sadly cancelled because of Covid. Next year we plan, if spared, a 'grand tour' of Ireland and a trip to the Picos de Europa and the Douro valley. I would guess 90% of the miles have been done with the roof down. I'm fortunate that my boon companion also likes these tours. Like you I suspect we have had the best years of motoring fun and I won't be updating the MX-5, which I will keep while ever I can use it.

I'm not trying to say my 130hp MX-5 is better than a 300hp Cayman but for my purposes I much prefer a convertible. Also I haven't, on fairly little acquaintance admittedly, ever been able to get on with DCTs although I believe one can have a manual Cayman.

My point is, knowing how, when and where you want to use it will help validate your decision. I certainly don't want to talk you out of it if it will do what you want it to do.

I can't really put myself in your shoes; I admire Porsches and some have been very good investments but in general I find high power gets in the way of driving enjoyment and whilst I could arguably afford or do the necessary man-maths for a £40,000 toy, I couldn't thoil it!

I know someone with an A110 and he seems to like it, but in my opinion doesn't use it enough!

If you're sure it's for you, do it.

Cars are a bit like women, it's amazing how some of them succeed in attracting men. (And, in case I'm accused of sexism, vice versa)

If you want to be talked out of it, just search 'porsche 718 cayman problems'. Speaking as someone who bought a self-indulgent retirement 'forever car' over ten years ago, its much appreciated feature is the heated infinitely adjustable (Audi) comfort seat.

And cars similarly suffer from seven (or fewer) year itch ... :-)

Clearly I know nothing about this class of car, but the brit car mechanic that runs a car sourcing bizniz for expats here in Taiwan says German makes have an especially poor survival record here and cannot be recommended.

Porsche, 4WIW, are the exception.
