Anyone have any knowledge or thoughts on the face lifted Suzuki Swift? Daughter is looking to replace her 8 year old Baleno and likes the look of these. She wants an automatic, which I believe to be CVT which I don’t think is the case in the Baleno..

any downsides we should be aware of?

It is almost (but not quite) an all new car rather than a facelift.

Downside's?, I think the Baleno was only an auto with the 1.0 Boosterjet, which was turbo and had 111bhp and 160NM of torque from 1500-4000rpm. The new Swift has a n/a 1.2 with 82bhp and 108NM of torque @ 4000rpm. So there will be noticeably less performance all round.

I have no issues with CVT's in general, we had a Jazz CVT a few years ago and the transmission, in terms of how well it worked with the engines ability, was absolutely superb. I believe the CVT Suzuki uses is Jatco, which certainly don't have the best reputation in various Nissan's which used them. But having done some research, it would seem that a lot of the problems were a result of poor maintenance and hard driving. There is plenty of anecdotal evidence to suggest they can be reliable if looked after and driven with a degree of restraint, and are reputedly exceptionally smooth. Personally, I'd have no qualms about getting one in the new Swift.

My thoughts turn to the increasing ability of modern cars, especially EVs, to accelerate rapidly. An annoying aspect of modern suburban driving is the sluggishness of some cars at traffic lights, especially those with only a few seconds on green. This car clearly needs a name change from 'Swift' to 'Slug'.

Yes, it’s a CVT.
There are only two trim levels, Motion and Ultra, and Swift is one of the few times I’ve said don’t bother with the top grade.
It’s no rocket ship, but, interestingly, the CVT is fractionally quicker than the manual.
Find a good dealer and you’ll be fine.

I've got one on order, due mid September, mines a manual in ultra spec, had a nice long test drive before we placed our order, I'm a bit of suzuki fan but I thought it lovely.

Had a Baleno as a loan car a few years ago, surprised it never sold better tbh.

Thanks all

some good points, she is going to go look at one today and see if they have an automatic to test drive. The Baleno is quite nippy and I do wonder whether she will find the Swift a bit too sluggish given what she is used to.

Her Baleno has been a brilliant car, was my mums before my daughter bought it, but she fancies a change and the Suzuki dealer where we now live seems to be a good one. We will see how it goes.

Appreciate your input, will update in due course.

If she finds the Swift a bit flat, she could consider a Dacia Sandero or Sandero Stepway. The auto (also a CVT) is still 20bhp down on the Baleno (and it is a wee bit heavier) so certainly no rocket ship, but it is a turbo and has a chunk more torque than the Swift at much lower revs (142NM from 1750-4500rpm), so should feel more muscular on the road.

Auto is only available on the top spec, the Stepway is a similar price to the the lower spec Swift but the Sandero is about £2k less. Warranty can be extended up to 7 years/100k miles for about £850 I think.

So a deal has been done. She isn’t a particularly fast driver, so felt the Swift would more than do what she wanted to do. She found a car she is happy with, and went for the Ultra spec in the end despite the extra cost. Some of that was offset as she got a £500 contribution as she is an existing Suzuki customer, so the overall deal is one she’s happy with.

Hoping this new car will be even more economical than the Baleno!

It will be!

I'd be interested to hear her opinion once she has had it a wee while though, perhaps you could update?

Will do! Thanks for the earlier input, it’s much appreciated. It’ll be well serviced as they extend the warranty up to 7 years if it is.
