My car was stolen from the drive last week, broke into the house, found the keys and away when we were on holiday. We are going to give a pole a go, one of those that folds up and down. I know nothing really stops thefts completely but making stealing yours a hassle hopefully makes them look elsewhere. The insurance payout was excellent so no gripes there and I have got another car the same as the gone one coming.

Assuming it's a newish car your sensors would alert you to the fact it is there so no real issue there.

No idea what this may be, but unless it's something absolutely solid I would go for one of those telescopic ones for which you need to dig a hole. Our neighbour had his Mercedes van nicked a few years ago and he installed one of the things I've tried to describe. So far the replacement has remained unstolen.

Never had a car stolen from our drive, never really had one that anyone would want to nick, to be honest. But anything that makes the job of being a car thief harder has to be a good idea.

Might also be an idea to buy one of those old-fashioned steering wheel locks, and keeping the key separate to your car keys. At least then they might have to make some noise before they could take your car.

This one bolts into the drive.

Unless it can grab something solid below the blocks (if the drive is paved) or is bolted into really thick concrete, thieves will just rip it out if they are serious - and something like that would be be done quite quickly. If they have angle grinders that would make a lot of deterrents ineffective anyway.

I have got another car the same as the gone one coming.

The thieves will be delighted.

Very kind of of you to point that out.

Some neighbours have those pole, but don't look strong. If they attached by 2 or 4 bolts. At installation they look strong, but over time they seem to have got broken.

Poles are only as good as the ground they're fastened to.
My workplace fitted some, but after a few weeks or bumps and knocks and they're almost on the floor.

Alarm mines.

These are effective in alerting you to attempted thefts. I had one years ago, I still have a few blanks left.

There are many sources, the usual online retailers, agricultural suppliers etc. Google is your friend here.

AFAIK these are perfectly legal if installed as instructed using the correct black-powder blank cartridges

Here's a cheap and seemingly foolproof way of deterring said thieves when you're going away but leaving the car - take all the car keys with you or give them to a very trusted friend or relative.

Sounds like someone had been previously 'casing the joint' and knew you'd be away, rather than just some random opportunist who 'got lucky'.

Unfortunately these days, as I've personally discovered to my cost (nothing to do with my car), trusting your neighbours (who may sound decent when you speak to them) is far more of a problem than it used to be.

More fool them. The time may come when they need your help. Being good neighbours is not just the right thing to do. It is also self interest.
