Whats a good medium sized car to look at? Under 10k.

Something different from a Focus or Astra, i thought an Auris maybe worth looking at?

The only other 2 were a Tipo or Suzuki Baleno.
Cheers

Citroen C4/Cactus/Picasso, Peugeot 308, Kia Ceed, Hyundai i30, VW Golf, Skoda Octavia, Seat Leon, Renault Mégane, Nissan Pulsar.

Of those, a Kia Ceed is probably the best in terms of quality Vs cost.

I think Balenos are quite interesting, which is the opposite to what the motoring press will tell you. Probably smaller than the rest though. Tipos are reputedly OK, but that's as far as it goes.

If you want boring, bomb-proof reliability, your title says it all. However, if you want to take a risk....................................................?

Ran a 2017 Auris 1.2T petrol for 2 years and close to 40K miles. Very, very good car. Total reliability, the 1.2T engine was powerful enough. Averaged about 44mpg (more on a run). Roomy enough and handled fine. Lights were better with upgraded bulbs but other than that it's a damm fine "does the job" car. Not a car you 'love' though.

Agree, probably not a car to love, but there’s a lot to like. I’ve had a 2013 1.33 Auris, bought 9 years ago as a pre-reg and other than routine servicing it’s been very reliable over 115k miles. A recent garage visit for sticking brake calipers has been all it’s needed in the last 3 or 4 years. Reasonably spacious, nice to drive, uses no oil and around 44mpg - feels like it could happily do another 9 years. I’d consider replacing it in time with a facelift 1.2T, so it’ll be interesting to hear if that engine proves equally reliable over time.

Just out of curiosity, which bulbs did you trade up to? I find both dip and main to be on the weak side (the horn even more so!) but I didn't realise that the "projector" style bulbs were even upgradable.

If HIR2 fit then I imagine www.ebay.co.uk/itm/323937412733

The downside with upgraded bulbs is that they also tend to have shorter lives.
