The BBC is reporting that BMW has introduced a new heated seat subscription in UK.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-62142208

BMW has sparked debate after offering an online subscription to turn on heated front seats in its cars in the UK for £15 per month.

A monthly heated steering wheel subscription costs £10.

Subscriptions have been available for features on BMW cars for some time in the UK, but the heated seat offer started this month.

The company says customers can enable all hardware features for a one-time payment if they prefer.

The news has sparked online debate, with news site The Verge saying: "In the case of heated seats, for example, BMW owners already have all the necessary components, but BMW has simply placed a software block on their functionality that buyers then have to pay to remove."

Apart from introducing these particular features in the middle of a heatwave, do you think this is a good idea?

No doubt they'll be dropping their prices. No? Oh.

Personally not a option I would want or choose, had heated seats on ( in?) a couple of cars in the past, not sure we ever used them? The option I would like is built in dash cams but wouldn't want to pay £15 a month for them...

So BMW sell a car. Owner 1 pays the fee then later sells the car to owner 2. Who then pays the fee to BMW and so forth. There was a time when only one profession you sold a product but kept it to sell again and again. But that's a more honest profession than car manufacturer.

Isn’t this what Tesla do.? The cars come fully loaded and you have to pay to get the various options initialised to operate.

Clever move by BMW regarding stock inventory.
Cut down massively on build variants by making everything with what would be options as ‘standard’ then only enable features if a customer wants to pay for them.
I haven’t seen any T&C’s for this, but I wonder if you could have a heated steering wheel, for example, only when it’s most appreciated, maybe November to March?

I can see software hackers happy with this as people can buy the base budget model and they can hack it for a one off fee to get all the goodies opened up for the owner.

You're effectively paying twice for it then, once in the cost of the car and again in the monthly payments - and what happens if there is a dispute or it fails.

Say for example, the seats don't heat up, will BMW just refund the £15 for that month and not charge further or will they be obliged to fix the seat at whatever cost that is (which could be a lot for an airbag, heated, electrically adjusted, lumbar supported, leather seat. They might just say - sorry, we don't want to offer that service to you any more.

Also, you hear cases of Amazon banning customers for using their services (too many returns or daring to do a chargeback on the credit card). Can you imaging in BMW of similar cut all of the key services from your car because of a dispute (satnav in the middle of a long trip, aircon in the summer etc).

Better, IMHO for BMW to advertise, all our cars now include heated seats at no extra cost.

Better still not to "buy" a BMW at all, neatly avoiding all this Debt of A Thousand Butts jive.

I imagine other manufacturers are watching closely to see what the customer reaction is. They will follow if possible. With the rollout of EV, manufacturers and garages will need to think of ever more elaborate ways of obtaining income as the traditional lines decline.

Who picks up the bill for non functioning heated seats once the 3 warranty runs out?

Does this indicate BMW will extend the warranty on the product?

Regardless of the above questions, I’m almost certain a back street garage hack will be available bo circumvent any restrictions

Heated seats?* Just put a small, cheap, woolen blanket on the seat. Heated steering wheel? Wear some gloves.
Much cheaper than subscriptions in my opinion.

* The (2002) E46 Touring I bought from my sister in 2012 has heated seats.

Going back about 35 years SAAB wanted some £300 for cruise control on some of their models.

The fact they did not tell the car buyer was that the cruise control module was already in the car. £58 bought the switch and all you had to do was connect the cables that were behind the blanking plate. No fancy electronics pass codes required!

Audi were the same. Buy a stalk and plug it into the existing wiring loom.

Smart also had an option for some trick front seats in one of the facelifts. It was quickly found that to have this option the owner merely needed to remove a bolt from the seat mechanism.

I used a £20 heated seat bought from Amazon. Works fine during winter. :-)

Tesla started this trend. There was a video from James May complaining about this.

The best solution is not to buy these cars. However, some people will do so manufacturers can get away with.

There will be aftermarket for dodgy/pirated software claiming they can enable this without going to the dealer. But at the same time these software may contain malware code - like delaying brake action by 2 seconds on every 57th time you press the brake.

It was the same on many Toyotas for CC, if the ECU for that engine supported it but your car came without just buy the stalk from a scrappy. .

Toyota are definitely looking at how & what they can monetise in subscriptions.

I had a mid-level Ford Focus at one point & discovered that it had all the wiring for interior ambient lighting (supposedly only specified on upper trim levels) installed - they just hadn't fitted the bulbs! About £1.20 later & let there be light ... :p

Here's how it is done with Dacia's to enable features that don't come with the car and to change what happens when you do various actions etc.

I daresay it can be done with other marques with different software.

This has been common in the electronics industry for some time, and as cars are increasingly computers on wheels than I think this is only likely to become more common. It costs a manufacturer to make different build standards, and if that cost is more than the cost of the extra hardware cost of the parts then it is logical to do it. There is also the possible extra revenue of a driver, even some time after the car was built, paying for, say, heated seats, during an especially cold winter. As an ex-Product Manager in telecoms this calculation was in common use in working out exactly what we would build and how we would sell features.

Better get used to it methinks.

It's the Microsoft syndrome - we used to be able to buy Office outright - now subscription only.

It is entirely plausible this is the tip of the iceberg - sat nav updates, heated seats - in the future possibly ICE upgrade, climate control vs aircon, security settings. In fact, almost every setting currently done on screen could be a part of a package.

Charging (say) £40 per month (high end smart phone level??) to have all options enabled would generate £480pa. Over the first 10 years of vehicle life the car company would make more from options subscriptions than selling the car in the first place.

Or you could buy from a manufacturer that chooses not to rip off its customers.. for now. If enough people refuse we can stop this business model.

No word on options for monthly subscriptions for those orange flashy things at each corner then? (I'll get my coat...)

How about a £1000 a month subscription to turn off a pre-installed radar ystem that keeps a Beemer at least the minimum highway code distance from the back of the car in front.

A quick Google search reveals at least half a dozen third party recoding specialists, who advertise a speciality in BMWs. I think BMWs new business model might need a rethink or the security really beefing up.

There was an American lawyer who specialises in the motor industry doing a piece on this.

He said it appears to be UK only at the moment (we're fools if we accept it).

He reasoned that if a part failed then they wouldn't fix it, they would just stop the subscription, unless the subscription made it profitable for them to fix (i.e. they were unlikely to swap out a £1k seat for a £15 a month subscription).
