Kia Hyundai. - Kia / Hyundai 1.7crdi v VAG 1.9. - ronald bennett

I've owned my Mark 4 Golf 1.9sdi for 16years and done most of the maintenance myself in that time. Its one of 2 cars in the household and a couple of years ago i bought the wife a 67 plate 1.7crdi Sportage. I may be wrong but the 2 engines seem very similar other than the Kia engine is chain cam and obviously quieter. The 1.7crdi seems to have a good reputation for reliability and i've often wondered if Kia copied and improved the 1.9. The 1.7 debuted in 2010 about the time the 1.9 was being discontinued and the designer of the latest generation of Sportage was ex Audi. Any thoughts?

The Hyundai/Kia 1.7 CRDi is part of the U-series of diesels with 3-cylinder 1.1/1.2 and 4-cylinder 1.4/1.5/1.6/1.7 versions.

Hyundai have enough in-house engineers to design these, plus the R-series 2.0/2.2 and S-series 3.0 V6 without copying VW.
