Kia Rio 2010 1.5 Diesel - Battery or Alternator issue? - Matt_28

Hi,

Got an issue with my Kia not starting on a morning if I pump up my tyres using the cigarette lighter to power the tyre pump. But it starts normally if I don't do this, I know I could leave me engine on when pumping up the tyres but would prefer to find out the fault.

Would this be an Alternator or Battery issue? It's done 58k miles and 8 years old, and not had either changed.

Thank you in advance,

Matt

A further possibility: there is no fault and you are simply taking too much juice by using the pump.

Unless I have got this wrong, it seems you are pumping up your tyres before starting the car from cold, which I find odd.

How often do you have to do this?

How long are you having to pump for, if its taking a while you are draining the battery.

If you are having to pump them up regularly you have punctured tyres or leaking beads on the alloys.

We need more info.

Have a feel of the lead of the inflator you are using when it's been running for a few minutes, you'd be surprised just how much current they take.

Why don't you start the car and let it tickover whilst the pump is doing its thing, seems the easiest solution, but i suspect the battery is getting past its prime anyway if its OE, even if its not the OE fitment many people buy the cheapest battery they can find and then wonder why it can only just cope.

8 years isn't a bad age for a car battery. Many don't last that long. If you had a charging fault your battery would be discharging as you drive, especially this time of year when the days are short and you need to use headlamps. I would change your battery in any case. Sooner or later it will let you down just when you could least do with it.

I suspect the battery is failing. It could be the original. Not difficult to get the battery and charging system tested.

Battery capacity falls as they age but because of their construction they can still deliver enough current to start the car but with very little reserve capacity, so I to would suspect the battery.

It might even show good on a load tester but because that doesn't take anything like the current that the starter does it could give a false reading unless connected long enough.

I would suspect battery with only 60k but 8 years old.

Test it properly as shown below and in case of any doubt, change it sooner rather than later.
