VW Polo 1.2 TDi - VW emissions fix - SLO76
Our 62 plate Polo 1.2 TDi Match has recently had its emissions "fix" carried out by our local VW dealer after much pressure from the dealer and several letters from VW with the DVSA heading threatening possible MOT repercussions if it wasn't carried out.

The car, which was hardly a ball of fire to start with is now suffering from a substantial increase in turbo lag from a standing start which is making pulling out into traffic notably more difficult and dangerous.

In every other respect there's no notable difference but I feel there's no way VW didn't know this negative outcome would occur after all their testing and should at least be warning owners and even possibly compensating for the loss of performance from the origional package. I like the wee car but it was originally bought as a commuter and must be fit for quick exits into fast moving traffic daily.

I've heard of DSG equipped cars suffering, our dealer openly admitted this but has anyone else noticed a detrimental change in VAG diesels post emissions fix?

HJ's had a number of people, in the 'ask HJ' section, commenting about the lack of low-down torque. I seem to recall it's reckoned 300-500 rpm more to get the same torque at low revs, but the top-end figures are the same - someone had even dyno'ed their car before and after the 'fix' to get some really accurate figures.

VW Polo 1.2 TDi - VW emissions fix - SLO76
Seems about right. They must've reduced fuelling at low revs but it's the further dishonesty of the firm for not admitting it would harm performance that bugs me. I wish I'd ignored the recall and would recommend others to body swerve it. I doubt the threat to fail their Mot will ever be enacted.
VW Polo 1.2 TDi - VW emissions fix - elekie&a/c doctor

I have customers that have had the fix and regretted it.So my advice would be not to get the update. It does not affect the mot emission test as the equipment is not accurate enough to measure any difference.

VW Polo 1.2 TDi - VW emissions fix - SLO76
The only way they could actively fail cars that haven't had the update carried out is by registering the details of cars that have been done with VOSA and to fail those that haven't but I figure it's an idle threat.
VW Polo 1.2 TDi - VW emissions fix - RobJP

I suppose it depends on take-up. If take-up is poor enough, then they may well say to VOSA that enforcement is the only way it'll work, and VOSA then enforce it (or not, as they choose)

Who would ever buy a WV?

I wouldn't go near one again after the experience of a colleague with a 1.6 diesel golf from new, great for the first 2 years, a disaster for the next 2 until he finally got shut of it last month, VW not interested despite it being under warranty, constant problems, etc.
And yes he was doing enough miles to warrant a diesel (40k on it before it started turning into a nightmare).

He kept hold of it for 4 years thinking 'its a VW, it must get better ', the ECR valve packing in again was the final straw.

He is now the proud owner of a Nissan Juke, not the car I recommended but he likes the looks! Telling him Nissan were no longer reliable fell on deaf ears.
VW Polo 1.2 TDi - VW emissions fix - gordonbennet

It was reasonably obvious the main fix was going to be by cutting fuel, with a turbo especially it will almost always result with an engine that is frustrating, at best, to drive...welcome to my world of completely gutless modern lorries.:-)

If emissions were recorded from the exhaust over a period of several months in real life daily use, before and after the 'fix', those real world emissions might actually end up being worse after the fix as people go from driving reasonably gently as that was all that was needed, to thrashing the thing mercilessly because thats the only way to make it go.

Part of the pleasure of a well set up turbo Diesel is keeping the turbo gently spooling between 1000 and 2000 rpm, with a large enough engine you don't need to go much above 2500prm except to exercise the system, but you do need enough fuel and any Diesel with the fuel supply too low just won't power up like one with enough.

Admit i wouldn't have gone anywhere near this 'fix' voluntarily, if it shows signs of becoming a legal requirement then the car would be sold on immediately.

I bet sales of tuning boxes and remaps are increasing as people find ways...they keep schtum about...of making their 'fixed' VW's driveable/pleasurable again.

It is quite good fun to row the wee car along within that narrow power band, where its superior torque to equivalent 1.2/1.4 normally aspirated petrols make it far more flexible. The update has made no discernible difference once up and rolling but the initial take away has become unacceptable especially from busy junctions.

If I could go back I'd've refused the work but the promises from VW and the dealer that it wouldn't be noticeable won me over when it was in having the failed boot lock replaced, one of many minor failures. More fool me.

Car's in need of a couple of tyres, has a handbrake that's been an ongoing problem and is due a timing belt next year so now might be the time to offload it. Need something similar size with similar economy and a bit of torque for safe overtaking at around £7k that will be used enough to warrant a diesel but willing to go petrol if it's got enough poke. No more VAG motors will be considered.

Telling him Nissan were no longer reliable fell on deaf ears.

We have had 2 Micras and a Note in the family since 2005 and other than a broken spring on a 7 year old car no parts have been required with no garage visits other than services. Hardly unreliable is it.

Not had a VW since 2002 but prior to that we had 4 on trot over 16 years with no issues at all. But the Leon is made from the VAG parts bin and that had been totally reliable for 3 1/2 years. That's why we are getting a Skoda Superb.

The Micra and Note were both using Nissan running gear unless they were diesels but the Juke is basically a tarted up Clio with Renault engines, gearboxes, electronics etc etc. Don't expect Nissan's traditional level of reliability.

exaclty,

the original Nissan Note used 8% components shared with Renault, the new one is 80% components shared with Renault.

not my figures, see the owners forum

and suprisingly, the new shape Note is a dog and has problems.

The K12 Micra was developed along with the Renault Clio and shared many components under the skin. As I understand it this same basic floorpan is the one used by Dacia and many on here have nice things to say about that. The K12 Micra used Renault diesels but the petrol engines and transmissions were pure Nissan and not used Renault/Dacia.

The original Nissan Note (E11) was based on the same underpinnings as the K12 Micra. Same choice of engines.

The underpinnings of the current Note (E12) was again jointly developed with Renault but as with the previous model the petrol engines (different this time) are pure Nissan (from Japan) and the diesels are again the shared Renault unit again.

Soi basically the same mix of components as before.

We have a 2015 (E12) Note and think its great. Loads of space, very refined for a supermini MPV and pretty economical. So far 100% reliable but I think the front ARB bushes need either replacing or greasing, going in next week.

Don't believe what they say on the Note forum, they are mostly a load of idiots. At least 2 of us have been banned for saying we liked the car and not had any issues. According to the moderator this could upset owners who are not happy and is thus against forum rules.

!!!!! Ha Ha! What kind of a forum is that? ! We had one of the original Notes and it was a great car. I'd have another one. I'm of the opinion that Renaults are not as bad as they were during the early 2000s The roads certainly aren't littered with dead Renaults and I have a feeling we as a nation love to gripe about French cars, while singing the praises of German ones. I had an older Megane that did 100K with only routine maintenance and many Renault- owning friends seem to have no bother with Clios and the like. MY own opinion is they're no better or worse than any other European make.

Out of the frying pan into the fire? EGR failure seems to be more common, I wonder how VAG will deal with failures out of warranty.

The original note was excellent and the owners forum confirms this.

The latest note is a dog and the Note forum confirms this.

Please check for yourself, most Note forums would buy another original note but wouldn't touch the latest shape Note.

The latest shape Note is not a patch on the original, no wonder Nissan have now stopped producing it.

Before we settled on the Note we tried/looked at many cars including the Polo, Fabia, Fabia, Ibiza, Corsa, etc and for our purposes it beat (and still does) all of them. Better kit, better prformance, more space, economy OK and £0 VED. As I said, does that sound like a dog.

Drive one and see for yourself. But I guess you are just believeing what it says on a warped owners forum and not finding out for yourself.

What an extraordinary attitude. Rest assured that we'll never do anything like that on this forum!

The current-shape Note has disappointed some because it's smaller and lower than the old one (no doubt to put some distance between it and the Juke), but as Skidpan says it clearly continues to meet many people's needs. We might well have looked at it if SWMBO hadn't been smitten by the Audi A1.

It's clearly not a dog, although it has plenty of space for one.

The current-shape Note has disappointed some because it's smaller and lower than the old one

To be honest it was 2007 when we last looked (actually the only time we looked) at the original Note and for us it had one serious issue. It was based on the Micra and the seats were in the same location laterally as the original car. In making the car bigger/wider they simply moved the sides out which left a huge gap to cross to get onto the seat, it was impossible for my mother with her mobility issues to get in and out safely. We never even looked in the back or boot. The seats in the current model are a perfect height for the wifes mother. She too has mobility problems and if they were any higher it would make entering/exiting the car difficult.

So the current Note might be smaller but its definitely more flexible if you get a model with the sliding rear seat. And the front seats are in the propper location making getting in/out easy. We had a C-Max for 5 years and the Note can be made to have more passenger space but this compromises boot space of course. But even with the seat all the way back the boot is as big as the Golf/Leon class of car. And as always Nissan do not include the space under the boot floor in the figures, even with a full size spare there is still decent storage space under the floor.

Here's what ours carries on a weekly basis. Rear seat set for 4 adults and a dog. In the boot we get a wheelchair and a full weeks shopping for 2 families with space to spare. There is no way that would fit in the Leon, one of the reasons we are getting the Superb.

My partner owned a current shape Note for just over a year (14 plate), n-tec plus 1.2 petrol from new.

It was a dog and had a few component and build quality faults (suspension bushes, failed power steering, no pollen filter in the pollen filter holder, rear de-mist didnt work (rear windscreen replaced), sat nav broke after 5 months (full unit replaced after lots of arguing with Nissan), air con didnt work from new and needed 3 dealer visits within 13 months of ownership to re-gas.

Not to mention the engine is absolutly gutless to the point its frustrating even in city driving (and loud!).

I have previously owned a Note for our business, the 1.4 n-tec.

It was excellent - no issues with getting in and out ,would take 4 staff up and down the A14 with ease, never any complaints, decent perfoming engine.

and it had the sliding rear seats - this is not a new invention for the current shape.

Likewise, alot of the cubby holes and clever design that was standard on the original note have been removed on the latest shape Note, no doubt to save manufacturing costs and to use the Renault parts bin.

Nissan have gone downhill, and I wouldnt have another one.

The best example of their demise is the Nissan Note, what was orignally a good, clever designed car with adequate performance is now just a parts bin of lazy manufacturing, poor quality components and a dreadful 1.2 petrol engine.

Dont worry, if you opt for the higher powered version of the 1.2 engine, they have a reputation for blowing up.

who would buy a Nissan?

VW Polo 1.2 TDi - VW emissions fix - skidpan

You appear to have an issue with Nissan based on one unfortunate troublesome example.

No one to blame but yourself for buying one with the gutless 1.2 engine, I would never consider buying such a low powered car of that size, its a perfect recipe for a slug. Was it not obvious to you that it would not match the more powerful 1.4 in the older car. Or was it the bolt on bits that the N-tec had fitted that gave it a degree of showroom appeal. When we went to view the Note there was an N-Tec in the showroom and the salesman spent ages trying to find the supercharger under the bonnet, he looked embarassed when I told him that the N-tec was only available with the N/A 1.2 and not the DIG-S or diesel.

and it had the sliding rear seats - this is not a new invention for the current shape

I appreciate they are not a new invention, our 2005 Micra had them.

Dont worry, if you opt for the higher powered version of the 1.2 engine, they have a reputation for blowing up.

Not seen this before even on the Note forum where they will do anything to discredit the current Note (and its owners).

who would buy a Nissan?

We will and when one matches our needs it will be without hesiation. We have had a Bluebird, Micra, Dads Micra and now the Note. During the same period Dad had a Primera, Almera and the Micra we later ran.

That adds up to approx 19 years of ownership and probably 150,000 miles.

What parts have been replaced in that time (excluding tyres and service parts of course). Well from memory one exhaust, one rear wheel cylinder, one set rear brake pipes (MOT), one clutch slave cylinder, one door lock (warranty), one rear hatch lock (warranty), one front spring (MOT) and one brake light bulb. Never had to buy a battery.

You have let one bad experience cloud the brands reputation when it appears that you have had at least one good experience with the brand.

VW Polo 1.2 TDi - VW emissions fix - daveyK_UK

One of my good friends is a senior technician at a Nissan and Renault (and Dacia) dual franchise.

I can state with confidence from his feedback, the X-trail, Qashqai, Note and Micra are not good cars nor reliable (especially the micra, some of the build quality horror stories out of the indian factory are a real eye opener).

His only mention of a Pulsar was one of the 1.2 petrol turbo engines blowing up (same one thats in your perfect Note!) nor has he mentioned the Juke so I cant comment on them, but if you want to buy another Nissan that is your choice.

VW Polo 1.2 TDi - VW emissions fix - skidpan

His only mention of a Pulsar was one of the 1.2 petrol turbo engines blowing up (same one thats in your perfect Note!)

Gets your facts correct before posting please.

The 1.2 in the Pulsar is the 4 cylinder turbo unit that is also fitted to the Qashqai and newer Jukes. The same engine is used in the Renault Kadjar and I expect other Renaults.

The 1.2 unit used in the Note is a totally different 3 cylinder supercharged 1200 unit that as far as I am aware is unique to the Micra and Note.

So perhaps you good friend needs to go on a course to update his knowledge about the cars he services/repairs. God help owners who take their cars to him.

And for the record I have yet to read about the 1.2 turbo engine blowing up. I visited the Qashqai forum when were looking and saw no mention.

VW Polo 1.2 TDi - VW emissions fix - skidpan

My last post on this thread since its gone way of the OP's orignal subject

but

why don't you admit that the info you posted was incorrect rather than suggesting I search for info on a non existant issue. Yes, I will admit I read about some of the 1.2 DIG-T engines using more oil than they should in some early Qashqais but all that appears to have died down now and it certainly never affected the totally different engine in the Note.
