Hi
I have been living in EU for several years but after a serious car accident I am returning to the UK.
I am what you might call "less abled", I can walk with a stick for very short distances and I am in something called the ESA Support Group. I get about £120 a week but have to pay some of that for help.
I have no savings, I was homeless but now in a hostel and hoping to get some sort of social housing.
My EU car has been repaired but I need to register it in the UK within 6 months if I want to keep it here or as soon as I become resident.
My problem is that my car is only worth about £500 if I were being optimistic and the cost to convert to UK is prohibative and I do not have the money.
My other problem with keeping my car is that the UK insurance seems different from EU, over there they said guy who hit me was at fault and my premiums were not changed. Over here if you witness an accident they seem to want to put your premiums up. So it seems they will not recognise my no claims for 9 years. Even on this incident I had car parts repaired myself and did not make a claim.
My car is an MPV which is helpful because I find it very hard to get into a low vehicle. They are very cramped and I can't go very far in them as I feel every vibration which causes pain.
I am not able to claim PIP which I believe has some sort of car mobility thing because I am not quite disabled enough.
So it seems my only option is to buy a car here, ideally something high like an SUV or MPV, I do not have the money for a new car and so I guess it will be eBay or local paper. I do not want diesel but not adverse to LPG, Electric or Hybrid if they exist. I say that because I have hardly any money, so it is going to be an old second hand car. I am really talking low end here I doubt I can raise £1k.
Can anyone recommend a model of car, that is high up, that despite being reliable has tanked in value and is cheap to insure?
My other problem is the insurance, can anyone recommend a company that will recognise foreign no claims and not penalise me for accident that was not my fault. I went to confused and they quoted me £800 for 3rd party only on my old car (in case I got it converted to UK)
Accident was nearly a year ago so I guess I will have 1 year soon. Car is off road atm and only option seem to be to scrap it despite potential of another 100k miles. Virtually impossible to sell a foreign registered car here.
I really have VERY little money to live on, without a car I am stranded, can't afford taxis and buses cause me a lot of pain.
So a car with low annual tax would be good.
Any help would be appreciated
