Audi A3 2.0 TDI 220000KM - I'd like your opinion - URGENT - lmartins

Hi There,

I am about to buy and Audi A3 from 2004. The car is the 2.0 TDI version with 220000KM. It has considerable extras but that is not my biggest concern here, I would like to know a bit more on the reliability of this car.

I heard the 1.9 TDI is far way better and durable than the 2.0 TDI version. From the rumors I heard 2.0 TDI cause troubles on the head casket and dual mass thing. However, this guy has invoices from Audi history with a considerable bill where the head casket and dual mass where replaced, new discs and breaking pads and other few things (the bill was about 4000€ which is almost the price of the car - near 5000€).

We were supposed to set a meeting on Audi for me to make a final report of the car and consider its status.

My question is, will this be a reliable business? He has replaced most of the important things but even though the car might give the same issues again?

I am considering it as I will not make much KM as I will use the car mostly on weekends.

I would like to hear from you with quite urgency as I am about to make a decision on it.

Thank you very much in advance for your help and opinions!

Cheers,
Lmartins

Ask yourself one question, why is it being sold, that is the issue here.

If you had spent so much money on your car, would you sell it on again for almost the same cost or would you run it into the ground to get the benefit of your investment.

I believe one of the problems of this engine is the oil pump and its drive, from what i understand the drive wears and the pump fails and obviously the engine is destroyed, has this more important issue been fixed?

I don't know where you are, nor the cost of cars in your country, but it's expensive for a 12 year old high mileage hatchback in UK ££, as your mileage will be low you might be better off buying another make Diesel ( i assume Diesel fuel is cheaper than petrol in your country) or a lower mileage petrol engined car of equivalent size, either cheaper for same age or newer for another make.

How reliable do you expect a 12 year old car to be?

If you want a really reliable diesel you can't beat the Peugeot/Citroen 2.0. 8 valve Hdi engine made until about 04 - they are practically bombproof and very economical.
