Should I insure my car at home or at university when I move to my student residence?

When applying for insurance, is it necessary to insure at the address where you will live for a year? Or is it okay to register it at your permanent address where your driving license is registered (parents' address)?

This is an interesting one, and one I am guessing is missing a piece of information. This situation usually occurs when students are going to university. You MUST insure the vehicle from where it most commonly is, and where it is stored overnight. It is this that carries the risk to the insurer against theft. You must insure the vehicle from the place you will be living. Your insurer may repudiate the claim, or cancel the policy should it find you have insured in a low risk home address (parents in Lake District for example) but are staying in Liverpool, Leeds or Manchester digs (high risk). They may argue that they wouldn't have taken the policy on board had they have known. If you spend 60 per cent of your time at home, insure from there. If it's at uni, from there. If you have a telematics black box they will know everything.
