I'm hearing a 'ticking' noise from my new Ford Fiesta TDCi's engine - is this normal?
I have had a Ford Fiesta 1.6 TDCI Titanium purchased new in February of this year. After four or five weeks, I could hear a quiet-ish ticking noise when the engine speed reached 1500 rpm (in any gear). I took it in to the service department for them to have a listen. The engineer/technician who came out on the test drive could not hear the noise that I was describing and suggested that I leave it for a few weeks as the engine was probably "bedding in". Six weeks later, I returned since the noise was still there.
Two visits later, the service supervisor came out with me to listen and he heard it as clear as anything. He booked me in for a proper inspection and it was decided to replace the gear lever and adjust the linkage. I took the car away again, but could hear the same noise after about 400 metres and over an increased range of engine speed. A week later, I returned the car for examination and the (different) engineer/technician said that what I was hearing was engine noise. Any ideas, please?

This engine is fitted to more cars than any other diesel engine, and I have driven it in most of them. It's one of the quieter small diesels. I have never noticed a ticking noise over and above the normal diesel sounds. It won't be the dual mass flywheel either because Ford does not fit one to the new Fiesta diesel. What was done might have been an attempt to rectify a vibration issue that might be something else other than the gearshift mechanism.
