Why is my MINI Cooper S so poor on icy roads?

I have a 12 month old MINI Cooper S which is absolutely dreadful to drive on winter roads. Why is this? I was always led to believe that MINIs were good in snow and ice. Is there something wrong with my car?

Down to the wheel size and the profile of the tyres. Modern cars need cold weather or all weather tyres in winter conditions, but not many tyre companies do these as runflats. Maybe Vredestein and Pirelli.
