Has our accident repair been taken over by an accident management company?

My daughter recently had the misfortune to hit a low bollard whilst parking her car, damaging the front bumper. We have taken the vehicle to a local approved repairer that the family have used before. Their estimate has been sent to her insurers who have insisted that the car is to be repaired by a company in a town in another county. I have spoken to them to see how long the car is likely to be off the road and have been told that, as they will not have seen the vehicle until it is collected, they have no idea how long or what parts are required. Whilst I am in no way doubting their competence in undertaking the repair, my concerns is that the owner has no say in choice of repairer and should we release the car not knowing what work is to be carried out?

It reads to me as if this claim could have been taken over by an 'accident management specialist' that makes its money by putting you in an overpriced credit hire car while the repair is taking place. There are lots of parasites in the insurance business that derive incomes from this sort of scam. Write to the insurer with the quotation you have and demand to know what its repairer is quoting because if it is more than your quote, the insurer's employees are costing the insurer money and you will report them to the FSA. Also ask what it is proposing to charge for a courtesy car, because we've just had a quote of £130 a month + VAT for a three year courtesy car lease, and some credit hire operators are asking that much per day.
