Following an accident, should I contact the third party's insurance company directly and avoid accident management companies?
I had legal assistance cover on my insurance policy. After an accident my impression of their service is that they seem to be fixed on getting me into a hire car. I was wondering whether I would be better served contacting the other party’s insurer directly asking for reasonable compensation for the time, money, effort and stress involved sorting out a repair, avoiding the car hire offered by my legal assistance/ claim management.

In a word, yes. Avoid signing any liability for the cost of a hire car. Do not give any 'accident management' operation your credit card details. Do everything through your own insurer, which your contract with your insurer binds you to do.
