Which car for a 30-mile commute and for my young son to drive?
My workplace is relocating shortly from its current position within walking distance of my home to a town 30 miles away. The commute will mostly involve a direct route on a dual carriageway except for a mile or so at each end. The move is likely to coincide with my son reaching his 17th birthday and starting to learn to drive. My main car is a Mitsubishi Outlander 2.0 DiD, which I want to keep for caravanning and other purposes. I suspect it will be effectively impossible to insure my son for the Outlander. I am planning to spend up to around £8000 on a car for both my commuting use and for my son to be able to use as he learns. I'm wary that the smallest engined city cars might not be up to the commuting task. What cars would offer the best compromise for managing the commute whilst delivering reasonable running costs and relatively sensible insurance costs for my son?

Citroen C1, Peugeot 107, Toyota Aygo - free tax, cheap insurance, low maintenance, high mpg. I think the 5-door C1 looks best. Seems tinny, but very strong underneath.
