Insurance company cancelled insurance without notifying me and will not repair accident damage - can anything be done?

I took our car insurance with Sheila's wheels on my car, a Toyota Celica. I paid the instalment by direct debit. (Comprehensive, NCD protected). I had my first accident in February of 2012. I have never claimed on any of my car insurance policies. At the scene of the accident, after giving my details to the police, I was asked to go into the police car to find out I had no car insurance. I was mortified. My car was towed away by a very expensive tow company.

I rang Shelia’s wheels to be told that they had cancelled my policy. They had not written to me. They had not called me on either my landline or mobile and they had not emailed me either. All they will say is that they actioned a letter on the 18 February. I had my accident on the 22 February. Still to this day I have never received this letter. They will do nothing about my car. Can anything be done?

There is something very odd going on here. Crash on 22 February, insurance cancelled on 18 February. Why? Could it be that your bank account had insufficient funds for the direct debit? If not, take the matter to the Financial Services Authority and if that fails use www.moneyclaim.gov.uk to sue Sheila's Wheels for the cost of the repair. It is a very good idea for everyone to check they are insured by using www.askmid.com and entering their car registration.
