Will winter tyres work in heavy snow?

Access to my house is via steep single track lane which does not get gritted. In the past I would avoid going out if I woke to a fresh fall of snow but now commitments mean I am going to have to go out. I own an all-wheel drive Audi Q3 and am thinking of buying winter tyres. Can you tell me what tyres I should buy and what the benefits are?

Definitely. You have a choice. If your existing tyres are worn, switch to a full set of Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons, Bridgestone A001s or Vredestein Quatracs and you can leave them on all year round.

Vectors took me up a 1-in-3 ski slope in a front wheel drive car, so that's how good they are. If your tyres are unworn you could consider dedicated winter tyres such as Vredestein Wintracs or Michelin Alpins.
