What hatch for less than £4000?

I am looking to replace my Y-reg Ford Focus 1.8 (130K miles) with something a bit more economical. I was considering the Focus 1.6 TDCi Zetec but was worried about the reported turbo failure. I have also looked at the Volkswagen Golf and Audi A3 but they tend to be slightly more expensive. What 5-dr family hatch under £4K would you recommend?

Probably a Skoda Octavia 1.9 without a diesel particulate filter.
