What AWD estate car for transporting dogs?

I need an all-wheel-drive estate car to transport a dog and luggage. We have a 2011 Mercedes-Benz C220 CDI in part exchange. We need reliability, economy and comfort. We have a budget of £15,000 - £20,000 plus the C-Class.

A BMW 320d Touring x-drive is on the way. That is likely to be the most economical. In the meantime, perhaps a BMW X3 2.0d x-drive.
