Which second hand Estate?
I have between £6-7k to spend on an estate or economical 4x4.
I would like a BMW, Mercedes-Benz or other high end brand, but would be open to other makes. I do around 15k miles a year. I've always had diesels, but wondered whether they are always the most economical?
I don't know whether buying high mileage is advisable or not?
Can you give me some guidance please?

Fot this sort of money, better to be sensible and stick with something like a Mondeo 2.0TDCI estate. Will be newer and lower mileage than a 'prestige' make, so less likely to go wrong, and if something does go wrong you will be repairing a £20,000 car rather than a £40,000 car so, in theory, repairs will cost you half as much.
