Buying a used mid sized car

What car is the best long term car for these needs:

Good build quality
Fun to drive
Practical
Timeless
Value
Reliability

My budget is no more than £9500, the cars I have narrowed it down to are the Honda Civic 1.8 ES T or the Audi A3 1.6 Fastback 5 door. Both will be petrol, so to avoid DPF problems later on.

I do around 10k miles a year, which would you pick?

I would go for the Civic 1.8i ES because of its roominess, chain cam engine and remarkable fuel economy of around 45mpg. But I can't tell you how long it will last.

Good choice of engines. Some petrol engines now chain cam. Comfortable and well built interior. cheap to run 1.6 TDI. Feels very refined especially on the motorway.
