Buying a second hand small car - what would you recommend?

At present I have a 1.6 Ford Focus, but as my 17 year old son will soon have passed his driving test I was considering changing this. I have been advised that it would be easier to insure a car with a smaller engine. Ideally I would like four doors, but it is not a necessity. What would you suggest?
