EMS light is showing

I have a 2003 Volkswagen Touran 1.6 FSI with 86,000 miles on the clock with full dealer service history. The EMS light on the dashboard came on and I had the car diagnosed. The timing chain is showing incorrect corrolation, and needs replacing. I went to the main dealer, and they quoted me £1000+vat to replace.

How can they justify charging me so much when the chain is supposed to be maintenance free?

Because replacing a timing chain is complicated. You may get it done more cheaply at an independent VAG specialist. Obviously the chain jumped for a reason. May be the tensioner. May be worn teeth on a pulley.
